I would think that the NoarwayHertige Community would have better things to do than forwarding scam e-mail from the Ivory Coast to its members. I am never pleased to receive this type of e-mail. Jim Heg

Dear Jim and other members of the NorwayHeritage community.
We are very sorry about the spam episode today. An individual, apparently from the Ivory Coast registered as a member on the community today 18/03/2003. This guy was intending to use the site to conduct his Internet money Scam. As soon as we discovered what was going on, immediate action was taken to eliminate his activities. We think we were able to stop him quite fast.
We have been fortunate up till today, as this is the first time we have been experienced such attacks on our privacy here on the NorwayHeritage forum. This is probably because it is not easy for spamers to use the forum for spreading spam. They are not able to collect any of the member's e-mail addresses from the site, but have to register as a member and then send e-mail one by one via a form on the site. This makes it a very time consuming process, and we will discover them quite fast. We will never be able to eliminate all risk of such vicious spam spreaders, but we can not let them take away from us the joy we have in being able to communicate and help each other on this forum.

I was not at all impressed that I was sent such an e-mail, ans if this was ever to happen again I will cancel my membership to this site eventhough it has been very informative to my research to finding family members. And I am sure that there would be others who feel the same and value their privacy.

From our logs it seams as if this person was able to send spam to about 120 of the 1028 registered members of the forum. It is devastatig and we will of course shut down the forum if this is to become a problem in the future.

As from now we will completely remove the possibility of sending e-mail from the forum. This also means that the subscription feature which allows members to be notified of new posts will be disabled. This will make it impossible for spamers to take advantage of the forum.

I did receive such an email as well, and I'm not writing to complain. I'm writing to tell the others who might complain that all they have to do is block unwanted email or delete it! I love this site, it has helped me out so much, and I wouldnt even consider leaving this site because of a few spams! So for those of you with your noses in the air, would you really want to leave this site? You will not find another that is as helpful, or friendly or as informative!

I totally agree with "ladytaurean". As long as there's no notification when someone answers to our postings, blocking the possibility of sending e-mail to participants will reduce the benefit of this site. From now on I'll include e-mail address in my postings so people can reach me if they want. ninakarls@hotmail.com

Thought I would let you all know that our friend from the Ivory Coast, who according to his IP address is actually situated in France, returned to the NorwayHeritage Forum again today 19/03/2003 apparently to do some more spaming. Due to the security precautions taken on the forum yesterday, he was not able to. He then registered a new membership as another person (still the same IP address), but according to our logs he was not successful in his efforts. He will no longer be able to violate our privacy with his Internet Money Scam, nor will any others. You can be pretty sure that the forum is safe from e-mail spamers, as long as you do not write your e-mail address in the messages you post.
