Gunder aged 35, wife Edel Torsdatter Toe aged 30 and their five children Anders Gundersen aged 13 , Jorgen Gundersen aged 11 months, Mari Gunnarsdatter aged 11, Eilert Gunnarsdatter aged 7 and Margit Gunnarsdatter aged 5 arrived on the Vesta 1851. I believe they went to Minnesota as I have found other extended family members in Harmony, Minnesota but not my direct family. Happy to exchange information.

Do you have the emigration record from the church book or from other sources?

Hi.
I found them leaving from Seljord 19.june1851. Together it was also another person from the farm To.
Egilef Stenersdaughter 63 years old. A mother to Gunder or Edel.

They have a daughter named the same. not Eilert, that's a he name, but å specialname like Egelif, unknown for me.

The local Farm and familybook of Seljord has notes of the family.

Great work Tormod.
Here are the emigration records you pointed out from Seljord June 19. 1851, Gunder Jørgensen To #114 - 120

I wonder if Gunnild Tovsdr abowe, #107 was Edel´s sister and Egelif Stenersdr To age 63 was the likely either Gunder or Edel´s mother or Gunnild Tovsdr´s MIL.

Gunder and Edel married Jan.13. 1836, he was from Bjørge under Toe, his father was Jørgen Christophersen. She was from Toe, her father was Thov Andersen #6

Thov Andresen Toe in the 1801 census on farm Toe
His parents was farmer Andres Gunleksen and Ædel Olsdatter, Tow had four brothers and one sister, Margit age 3

Seljord 1815, Gunder Jørgensen and his parents Jørgen Christophersen age 65 and Mari Gunderdr age 38 and 3 siblings living on Bjørge

Seljord 1801 show unmarried farmer Jørgen Christophersen age 51 on Bjørge

Seljord 1782 show Jørgen Christophersen, 2 servants and "Inderste" Thore Towsdatter living on Bjørge

Inderste can be:
A renter or another word for "Kaarkone", perhaps his mother as previous owner of Bjørge.

Seljord 1782, Anders Gunliksen, unmaried, living with his old mother, one brother and 2 servants on Ness yttre

Well, as someone already has written Gunnar came from the neigbour farm named Bjørge. He was a son to: Jørgen Kristoffersen 1750 - 1823 and Mari Gunnarsdaughter 1775 - 1825.

Edel was from To and was a daughter to Tov Andersen 1786 - 1850 and Egeliev Steinarsdaughter 1788 -.
Tov and Egeleiv got two more daughters:
Gunhild born 1818 and Åste born 1821. They was also married and all 3 families left for US in 1851.

Tormod, you are right,
Egeleif was a very unusual name.
Likely the priest, Hans Jacob Wille, wrote down what he heard.

Likely Egeleif-Egelev-Egelif-Ægelev was a mix up between male name Eigil, pronunced Æigil also spelled Egil and Egel and Leif also spelled Leiv, Lev and Leuv in dif. church books and census´s from Telemark and Buskerud.

I think to remember if not Egeleif was mentioned in an earler topic some months ago in Norway Heritage.

Ægelev was christened August 1788 in Seljord, parents Stener Gunnersen and Gunnil Larsdr Rødningen, last person Right page

Stener Gunnarsen Røningen and Gunil Larsdr Oppebøn married Dec. 27. 1788.

Evens parents were engaged and married in 1762, see top of right hand page. Note that Daniel Gunleksen "er Dother-Søn af Hr Daniel Wulf" - son of the daughter of Daniel Wulf (probably a minister).
For his wife Christence Evensdatter we can read "er Dother af Hr Skakkes Dothers Dothers Dother" - is daughter of Hr Skakkes daughter-daughters daughter!

The numbers of generations dont correspond, but the only Skakke I ever heard about is:
Earl Erling Skakke Ormsson from the mighty Stødle-family in Etne who married Princess Kristina 1155, daughter of King Sigurd 1. Jorsalfare Magnussen.
Erling fall in the battle at Kalvskinnet in Trondheim 64 years old June 19. 1179 against king Sverre.
Erlings son king Magnus Erlingsson fall in the sea-battle at Fimreite in Sognefjorden against king Sverre 1184.

Skakke means sloping/croocked, Erling got his nick name Skakke after a sea battle when he was hit by the blow of an axe in his neck as a young crusader in the Mediterranean Sea.

Hi there,
hopefully you will get in contct with descendants from some of the Toe-sisters Roberta.

A correction:
The name Skakke in the church record was a wrongspelling for Schanche.

Daniel Wulf Einar pointed out was Daniel Michelsen Wulf 1635-1713, Vicar in Seljord church living on farm Hougstogo in Flatdal local parish in Seljord.
Daniel married Maria Zakariasdatter Schanche 1655-1736 Feb. 18. 1672.

Their daughter Katarina Danielsdatter married Gunleik Olavsen Dale in 1771, parents to Daniel Gunleiksen Dale.
Note that Tov Andersen Toe died 1850 on Dalestykke.

Here is a famliy tree from Norway:
Maria Zakariasdatter was daughter of priest Zakarias Johnsen Scanche and his 2. wife Zarka Jansdatter
Click on "Etternavnsliste" (alphabetical) top page, enter Jansdatter and Sarka

Here is a link from 2005 concerning Daniel Wulf Click here

I can´t guarantee this links are correct, but they both seems very promising and serious to me.

Good luck in examine this links leading to USA and Norway 2007.

Correction to Einar? I think the correct birth record for passenger 44 (Gunild Torsdatter) is the reference in your earlier posting of 9/13/07 (#25 on p. 19 in 1818) not the one you listed on 9/14 as #19 on p. 18 in 1818. The parents are wrong in the #19 one.

Thank you DALB for all the good information. I don't know how you managed to find most of it because those records are not very easy to read. Kåre, in your posting of 9/12 you state that Anders Gunliksen is on Ness yttre in the 1782 census of Seljord living with his mother. If you were referring to Anders Gunleksen who married Edel Olavsdr and was the son of Gunlek Towsen and Mari Olsdr, it couldn't be the same Anders. His mother, Mari, died in 1744. My notes indicate that: The death and burial record is found on p.42 which states she died at 38 as the result of the birth of her daughter, Astri. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7968&idx_id=7968&uid=ny&idx_side=-44

I descend from Gunlik's line, not Mari's so I had not pursued her ancestry. I don't know about Mari's background at all at this point. However, Gunlich is shown in the Bygdeboks as the 5th owner of the Toe Farm (perhaps the Fjostuft portion?). He got Toe from his father, Tov Andressen. From that I would guess that Gunlik and Mari may have lived at Øvreland first before moving to Toe when his father no longer was able to farm or when he died. Tov died in 1769. His birth and baptismal record is found on p. 17 of the Seljord Parish Registers for 1692. The death and burial record is found on p. 27 of 1769. I have a lot of information from LDS on the Utgarden relationship that I have not yet put into the database. Perhas that will eventually shed some light on the subject. I don't know as yet how they fit into the family exactly.

The name is Anders, born May 1 1844, christened June 9. His mother was "Ugift Quinde" unmarried woman Anne Stenersdatter Bugten i Sellej. (Seljord) "der udlegger som fader gift Mand" - who gives as father married man Gunder Jørgensen Toe.
Godparents were Maria Ketelsdatter Svarvaren, Niels Ketelsen Svarvaren, Tarje Skoland, Maren Nilsdatter Bugten and Gunild Nilsdatter Bugten.
Anders was baptized at home by Ole Knudsen Strandstøl and since he was an "uægte" child the information was "Anmeldt af Barnemoderen selv i Nils Svarvarens Nærværelse" - given by the childs mother herself with Nils Svarvaren as a witness.

Olaf "twilling" - twin, was born Sept 13 and Nov 21 "i Sellj. stadf. dpt." - in seljord (curch) confirmed christened (at home).
His parents were "Ugift Quinde" unmarried woman Anne Stenersdatter Bugten "og Peder Olsen Gjersand, enkemand" - and Peder Olsen Gjersand, widower.
Godfathers were Gunild Hunsaas, Dordi Smeland, Helge Svarvaren, Guttorm Smeland, Halvor Smaadalene.
Since Olaf was an "uægte" child this information was "Anmeldt af Barnets Moder Selvstendig" - given by the childs mother alone and Olaf was "hjemedt. af" - christened at home by Jacob Terjesen, Aase.
In the last column is noted "Quindens 2det Leiermål" - the womans second "uægte" child - "dette barn war twilling med et andet som war dødfødt" - this child was a twin with another who was stillborn.
In the records for burried you will find the record for stillborn child. "Ugift Quinde Anne Stenersdatter Bugten og enkemand Peder Olsen Bugten Uægte og Dreng samt Twilling med et andet Barn som lever" - uægte and boy together with another child who is living.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to finding more information on Anne Stenersdr Bugten as she is the ancestor of the Australian link in this thread? I checked for censuses, but was unsuccessful and I could not pinpoint her in the LDS records either. I don't have enough information, I guess. According to a source one of the Bygdeboks identifies Peder Olsen as living on the Bugten farm at one point. Also that Gunnar Jorgenson Bjorge's son born to Anne Steinarsdr in 1844 named Anders went to Lie in Mo and then Australia in 1873.

The only information I have on Anne Stennersdatter is that she was born 3 Jan 1819 Lie, Seljord and that her father was Stener Evensen.

Anders married Aase Halvorsdatter 11 Oct 1872 in Mo. Aase was born 3 Jan 1845 in Mo, the daughter of Halvor Thorsen and Margith Larsdatter who were married 20 Nov 1842 in Mo. Halvor was born 1811 and Margith 1818 but that is all I know on them.

Anders and Aase emigrated to Queensland 1873 with their two sons but both children died on the voyage. They had another four children in Queensland but two died. There are descendants from two sons - my maiden name is Gunderson because Anders used the name Andrew Gunderson after he had been living here for a while.
