Halfden Trygve Sundbye was born in Norway in 1878 and (according to the Pasadena Morning Sun in 1926) "was born in Norway to seafaring people he and rose in the profession to become a officer of ocean ships."

In 1900 he was in Honolulu Hawaii, and 1/1/1901 was in Pasadena California. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1907 in Los Angeles, California. He settled in Pasadena where he married Alberdena Sophia Meyers and had a son John George Sundbye who became a dentist there.

I am completely at a block for his family! I have been able to reach back 6 generations for everyone else in the family but him!
Any help would be appreciated! Sheila

A US naturalization in 1907 will list information about Halfdan's origins in Norway that will allow you to research. You should get a copy of those naturalization papers, the entire set of applications, etc.

A hearty thank you to all who have responded! How nice to not be alone in this search any longer... to Hopkins: can you tell me how to get a copy of the 1907 naturalization papers? Should I write to the Los Angeles department of ???

I do have the family that follows HT Sundbye, not the family of HT himself, or of Alberdena Sophia Meyers (although I do know thanks to the Pasadena Library that her father was Henry (Heinrich) Meyers..

I joined footnote.com to find out that HT's naturalization papers state that he arrived in Eurika CA aboard the ship "City of Adlaide" out of Newcastle Australia, however on the Adalaide ship website they do not list any sailings past 1886. The mystery just keeps coming!
It also statted that he is from Fredriksstad in Norway....

Here is a Trygve Sundbye in the 1900 telling, from California, and born in 1878. He could be visiting his parents. #56

His occupation is a Styrmand = shipmate. Digitalarkivet is not working tonight, so I can't check for his birth record.

In 1906 all naturalization processes were taken over by the federal government. There are entire books dedicated to the subject of US naturalization, obtaining and using those records for genealogical purposes.

The 1900-telling has : " Hjørnet af Bingsgd+Glacisgade" By the corner of Bingsgd +Glacisgade, and the 1879 census has Glacisgaden. gd/gade/gaden means street.

Halfdans mother Anne Helene, born 1838 is #14
her parents were Ole Olsen and Dorthe Torstensdatter, Ramsekleven.
Halfdans father Johan Jørgen was the son of Johan Jørgen Pedersen Sundbye and Petro Anne Hansdatter. He was born May 2 1841, see #55

This looks like Johan Jorgen's parents in the 1865 census: 1865

So now there are some ages given for Halfdan's grandparents. Jørgen was age 55, and Petro was age 54. They could have been married around 1840 or before.

Petroe Anne was born July 4 1812, see top of right hand page here
her parents were Hans Hansen and Olaug Andersdatter, Ramstad.
Has not found Johan Jørgen Pedersen Sundbye yet, but it is reasonable to believe that the marriage June 18 1802 at the bottom of left hand page here
is his parents, they were Peder Fridrichsen Sundbye and Johana Maria Jørgensdatter.
Their first child was Andri Fridericha bapt March 17 1803, see left hand page here
Jan 26 1806 they baptized their first son Friderich Anthon, see here
In 1807 they had their second daughter Juliane Maria, see here
Halfdans father Johan Jørgen was actually baptized Jørgen, see left hand page next to the bottom record here
he was born Oct 21 1810 and bapt Nov 4.
His confirmation record is #4
In 1801 corporal Peder Friderichsen-Sundbye was at Friederichstad Fæstning and Johane Maria was a servant for Johannes Rye.

note that Sergiant Sundbye was one of the witnesses.
According to the 1801 census Hans Hansen was then 21 years old.
Olaug Andersdatter was 22 years old in 1801 and her baptismal record is most likely #5
she was a twin, was baptized Febr 14 1779 and her parents were Anders Nielsen and Abelone Larsdatter.

There is an emigration record for Anna Sunby, age 28 from Fredriksstad, leaving Krisitiania 29 May 1902, on the SS Hekla for New York, arriving 13 June 1902.

She could be a sister to Halfdan. Unfortunately I was unable to find her on the ship's manifest. The Ellis Island Data base is not working very good today..

Abelone Larsdatter was baptized Sept 20 1750, see left hand page top record
her parents were Lars Larsen and Hellebor Andersdatter.
Abelone was married twice, see 1801
her first husband Anders Nielsen was burried Oct 14 1785, see #48
he was then 56 years old.
Halfdans grandmother Dorthe Torstensdatter is most likely the one at the bottom of right hand page here
baptized Aug 11 1805 and the parents were Tosten Nielsen and Karen Haagensdatter.

her parents were Haagen Andersen and Cathrina Didrichsdatter Espestie.
Torsten Nielsen was baptized April 8 1776, see the fourth from the bottom of left column here
his parents were Niels Nielsen and Martha Jensdatter Skaare.
Niels Nielsen and Martha Jensdatter were married Febr 12 1776, see second record here

I think Anna Sundbye may have been a cousin, in a US Wisconsin census she is married to Hans Hansen and has a parcel of children with him.

Torsten Nielsen on Hestehagen in 1801, Landsoldier (Infantry) and parents, tenant farmer Niels Nielsen and Marthe Jensdatter and a younger brother Cornelius age 18.
Jens Arvesen age 75 and Dorthe Michelsdatter age 73 are Marthe Jensdatters parents.

Torsten Nielsen was a recruited soldier in Sønnenfjeldske Gevorbne Infanteriregiment. 1. Nasjonale Bataljon, Onsøske (Onsø) Compay.

Karen Haagensdatter age 22 and parents Haagen Andersen and Catrine Didrichsdatter on Espestie in 1801, one brother Ole age 14 and two sisters, Grete and Inger. Anderse Didrichsen working as a servant could be her mothers brother, Hans Naskow "inderste" renter, soldier and shoemaker was likely a relaitve.

Catrine Didriksdatter was born on Espestie and christened in Onsøy Feb. 23. 1754, top right hand: Katrine Didrichsdatter Espestie born to Didrich Rolvsen and Maria Zachariasdatter

Didrich Rolvsen was from Espesttie, he married Maria Zakariasdatter in Onsøy August 23. 1751, they were engaged in Mai, right page 7. line from top:

Didric Rolvsen Espestie and Maria Zachariasdatter.
Right column 4. line has the date for the wedding, 23. Aug.
Cationister/Best men: Stilloug Espestie and Tønne Bossum

Didrik Rolvsen was likely born on Espestie, his confirmation record from Dominica Quasimodi geniti, April 5. (1. Sunday after Easter)1744, 2. column 14. from top:

You will find Haagen Andersen in the left column #2 from the top
his parents were Anders Mogensen and Kirsti ?
Haagen was born out of wedlock.
Anders Didrichsen in the 1801 census was Chatrines brother, see #6 from the top in right column, left hand page here
Chatrine also had a sister Kirstine, see bottom of right column, left hand page here
Marthe Jensdatters baptismal record is the third from the top, left hand page, left column here
she was baptized July 29 1753.
Her parents Jens Arvesen and Dorthe Michelsdatter were married July 5 1753, see #7 from top right hand page here

An explanation and definition of the words from the censuses abowe.
On top of the cencus from Digitalarkivet you will find:
- Amt- County
- Prestegjeld-Parish
- Sokn-Sub parish
- Gard-Farm
2. line first name and lastname, then Hushaldstilling which means position/standing. Husbonde-Head of Household.
- Hans kone-His wife
- Alder-age
- Sivilstand-Material status: Givt/Gift-Married, Ugift-Unmarried.
- Yrke-Profession.
- Leilending-Tenant farmer. Haagen Andersen was a tenant farmer on sub farm Espestie under Ellinggaard owned by Hans Chrystie, "Krigs assesor" assistent judge in the Ministry of Defence. Ellinggaard was a "Sædegaard", a noble farm first owned owned by Jon Haftorsen 1312-95, the kings Counsler and Knight.
- Føderaad-Former owner, a sort of pencion, recieving support from the new owner of the farm by a contract made on the sale.
- Enkemand-Widower
- Enke-Widow
- Børn-Children, s-son, d-daughter
- Tienestedreng-Male servant
- Tienestepige-Female servant

Espestie is first mentinoed in 1595, the name is coming from Espe (Osp)-Aspen and sti means foothpath.

This Dictionary could be to a great help in reading the censuses.

Norwegian Pronunciation is quite different from the English, the letters AA has changed to Å, some lastnames and farms are still keeping the old spelling.

Østfold County
Fredrikstad town and Onsøy parisn are located to the southern part of the county not fare from the Swedish border. Øsfold was earler named Smaalenene, see the 1801 census.

Some farms can be found in this map
one example is to write Espesti (Gårdsbruk), Fredrikstad, Østfold in the søk - search line and/or on the left where you are supposed to velg - choose.
Spellings of the farm names may be different today.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. When you've studied and used the instructions and been able to find a scanned page that you'd like to capture as a URL to share with someone else or save for your family history documentation - just copying the URL that your browser shows will NOT provide a working link.

Working direct links to the scanned images on the Digitalarkivet can be copied and pasted from the desired page from a display option available. Olaugs twin was named Hilleborg, she was baptized at home which was not the case with Olaug. In the record is stated that the father came from a place Raaedahlen in the Thune parish in Østfold. Where the mother came from is not noted nor when the children were born.

I have news that HT Sundbye was on the ship Friheden. There is a painting of the ship which will be handed down to his great great grandson upon the death of his step mother. Any photos of this ship?

Hi,
This seems to be Friheden you asked for, build 1877, I dont know if there were more ships named Friheden "Freedom".
Bark Friheden was wrecked after a collision June 6. 1905 in Fredrikstad, the masts were taken down and Friheden was changed to a Barge.

Johan/Hans Johan Sundby from Fredrikstad, Shipmaster on Friheden from 1895-1903 must be Trygve Sundby´s brother, nr 54 in the 1900 census in page 1.

My great grandfather was Halfdan "Ted" Trygve Sundbye. His daughter Helen was my grandmother.

I haven't worked on any genealogy for quite a while so all of this information about his family is a bit overwhelming and exciting.

If you are interested in photographs I have some of Halfdan and
Alberdena's family. I also have a photograph of his father at his mother's grave site. Do you know that he had a brother who lived in Australia?

I would love to exchange notes on how Trygve and Alberdena met and married. I've been told he was quite a character. Frankly I would love to hear any stories about the family.

Thanks so much for your reply re: the marriage of Oloug Andersdatters parents. On the entry above that dated 2/12/2008 I was following up on Hans Hansen Ramstad being from a place Raaedahlen in Thune parish in Ostfold. I think Olaug was from Thune, but on the 1807 census for Fortegnelse of the Nordenfieldske Infanterie Regiment in Fredrikstad on May 5, 1807 included: Vegh. Tamb. Hans Ramstad, b. in Drobak, age 28, lived in Fredrikstad for 10 1/3 years, shoemaker; wife Olove Anders Dtr. born in Thune S. (aka Tune), 30 years old, lived in Fredrikstad for 8 years; and daughter Gunild Marie 1/2 year, born in Fredrikstad (Hansen.doc 14). Is it the case that when Gunil Maria was born in 1806 they were in Raaedahlen in Thune parish (see posting above), but that Hans was born In Drobak? I still cannot find his baptism in Drobak. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

It was Olougs father Anders Nielsen who came from "Pladsen Raaedahlen i Thune Sogn" - the main farm was Raa.
When Gunil Maria was born Hans Hansen Ramstad and Oluff (Oloug) Andersdatter were in Fredrikstad.

If Hans Hansen was born in Drøbak it will be difficult to find the parish record for his baptism, part of the records 1779 seems to be missing.
Looking for his confirmation record did not end with a hit either.

If Hans Hansen was born in Drøbak it will be difficult to find the parish record for his baptism, part of the records 1779 seems to be missing.
Looking for his confirmation record did not end with a hit either.

Thanks to all of you, Eibache, Lester Hanson, Kaarto, my daughter Linea Lauren Sundbye-Palmer, my son Robert Nelson Sundbye and their father John George Sundbye III went to Fredrikstad Norway last month. They met with family members they never would have known about without your incredible selfless help. They met their cousins Camila and Kari Sundbye, went speed boating along the fiord, stayed in a lovely cabin and enjoyed picnics that took them to the stone foundation of Johan Jorgens mothers home. They met the newlywed owners of Johan Jorgens home where Halfdan Trygve Sundbye grew up. The owners allowed them graciously to tour the place and presented them with the original paperwork transferring the house to Johan Jorgen back in the 1800's. All of this would not have been possible without your help. Tak!~

Torsten Nielsen born 1776- Married Karen Haagensdatter 1777- Married 27 Mar 1801 in Onsøy, Østfold, Norway

Known information:

Torsten Nielsen on Hestehagen in 1801, Landsoldier (Infantry) and parents, tenant farmer Niels Nielsen and Marthe Jensdatter and a younger brother Cornelius age 18.
Jens Arvesen age 75 and Dorthe Michelsdatter age 73 are Marthe Jensdatters parents.

Torsten Nielsen was a recruited soldier in Sønnenfjeldske Gevorbne Infanteriregiment. 1. Nasjonale Bataljon, Onsøske (Onsø) Compay.

Karen Haagensdatter age 22 and parents Haagen Andersen and Catrine Didrichsdatter on Espestie
Oh and Camilla Sundbye and her father Tor are coming to visit me next week!
