My grandfather was born in Norway in 1889. He came to US with his parents and siblings in the early 1900's and he settled in Bath, ME. He married an Irish lady from Boston who's name was Kathryn Kressey. They produced 23 children, some who then relocated to Minn. and Nevada. My mother, Margaret, was the youngest of the 23 children, and Hans passed away from heart disease, alcoholism, and black lung in 1939. He worked under the shipyard shoveling coal. I do not know if my great-grandparents and my grandfather's siblings stayed in Maine or if they moved to Minnesota too. I am only 40 years old and if my grandfather was still alive, he would be over 116 years old. Thank you. |

Johansen is a very common name in Norway. Can you provide us with your grandfathers name, parents names and siblings you know of? |

Yes, you got it right. I had forgotten to put his full name in my post, his full name was Hans Anton Johansen. When he passed away, my mother, the youngest was only 6 months old. In response to the first poster, I don't know what my grandfather's parents names were or my grandfather's siblings. My grandparents did have about 6 sets of twins. Out of all of their children, there are only about 4 left alive, including my mother and three of my aunts, two who are fraternal twins.
I do have a cousin who has a copy of my great-parent's marriage certificate from Norway. I was told that my great-grandmother was a little bit Swedish, which was quite uncommon back then because I have heard that the Norwegians and the Swedish didn't really like each other. |

Do you know his birth date? There is a possibility in the emigrants over Kristiana Click Here His destination is Canada although he could have gone there and then to Maine. He doesn't appear to be traveling with family but the rest of the family could have come earlier or later. Have you gotten copies of death and marriage certificates, obituaries? You need to find more information on him in the US in order to track him back to Norway. Carla |

According to the Maine marriages on line data base, Hans Johansen of Bath married Catherine M. Cressey, also of Bath, on 1 June 1912. The full marriage record should give the names of both sets of parents.
He appears on the 1920 census (as has been noted) as Hans A. Johnson and he appears on the 1930 census as Hans Johansen. In both cases, he says that he immigrated in 1910 (1920, naturalization process was partial; 1930, naturalization was complete). So you'll be able to get his papers.
I'd suggest that you contact the state of Maine (Augusta) to request copies of the marriage record and his death record (hers too if you want her parents). As has been pointed out, Johansen is a frequent name and before you spent time tracing down a line in Norway, you'd be advised to be sure of the family.
Incidentally, the 1930 census says that Catherine was born in Massachusetts (as so were both of her parents) but the only Catherine M. Cressey that I could find in Massachusetts of the approximate age was in Boston in 1900; her mother was from Ireland and her father was from Maine. |
