I had been searching for the ancestry of Olava Olsen, my maternal great grandmother. I have recently found that her name was Frederica Olava Olsen born approximately 1862 c/- Bertie Christensen, Gjettemyrs, Weien, Christiana. In New Zealand she was always known as Olava
She emigrated to New Zealand on board the Arethusa from London on 1879-09-03 arriving in NZ on 1879-12-07. aged 17 and described as a Domestic Servant.
I am interested in researching her ancestry. Can anyone kindly help?

Here she is with parents and 4 siblings in census-1865 for Christiania (Oslo), Norway:
Ole Christensen, 48, born in Hedmark county Berthe Marie Jacobsdatter, 36, born in Gjerdrum, Akershus county Hans Olsen, 12, born in Christiania Karen Olsdatter, 10, born in Christiania Marie Olsdatter, 7, born in Christiania Fredrikke Olave Olsdatter, 5, born in Christiania Caroline Olsdatter, 2, born in Christiania
Her parents are Ole Christensen & Berthe Marie Jacobsdatter
Berthe Marie Jacobsdatter looks to have remarried between 1866 and and 1870, because in 1875 she is married to Kristian Kristiansen. Here is Fredrikke Olava with parents and 4 siblings in census-1875 for Christiania (Oslo), Norway:
Kristian Kristiansen, b 1828 in Kristiania Birte Marie Jakobsen, b 1827 in Gjerdrum, Akershus county Fredrikke Olava Olsen, b 1862 in Kristiania Karoline Olsen, b 1864 in Kristiania Amalie Kristiansen, b 1870 in Kristiania Dorthea Kristiansen, b 1874 in Kristiania
Address: Gedemyrsveien 7, Kristiania
Gjettemyrs, Weien, Christiana = Gjettemyrsveien, Christiania (Oslo)... old spelling: Gedemyrsveien Bertie Christensen = her mother Berthe Marie Jacobsdatter

The first child of Birthe Marie and Kristian, Amalie Christine was born at Dalsbergstien 88 Dec 20 1869, which was before they married. See #37 Fredrikke Olava was born July 30 1861 and baptized Dec 26, see #249 the parents were then living at Bisletværket, most likely the same adress as for the 1865 census.

Fredrikke Olaves sister Karen was born April 8 and baptized Karen Christine on May 25 1856, see #121 The father was working on a brickyard - Bisletværket.
Her brother Hans was born Jan 31 1854 and baptized Hans Jacob, see top record the family was then living in Hausmansgaden. In a note it says that belonged to another pish - Vår Frelsers Menighet, the baptism is also recorded there, see top record - the birth date is here given as Jan 21!
When Caroline was born, see #42 they were still living at Bislet.
Fredrikke Olaves father Ole Christensen 47 years old died June 6 1867, see #101
No marriage record or birth records for her parents found so far. |

This might be her:
Berthe Maria Jacobsdatter Christening: 28 MAR 1830 Gjerdrum, Akershus, Norway Parents: Jacob Hermandsen & Marthe Guldbrandsdatter Source: Akershus county, Gjerdrum, Parish register copy nr. I 1 (1816-1837), Birth and baptism records 1830, page 286-287. No 9, right page
Hedmark is quite a big county, and there was a lot of "Ole Christensen" born there around 1820, so it will be hard to locate his origin without any more clues. A marriage record would be essential, because that should reveal his fathers name and possibly township or the farm where he grew up.
Did you check the marriage records around 1850-1854 for Aker, Oslo, Einar?

Hello Jan Peter,
Thanks for that information - it's most useful.
As far as a marriage certificate is concerned, I am unsure how to locate such a document, not being able to read the Norwegian language and not knowing where to look. Based her in New Zealand, there are limited facilities for finding such documents.
Any suggestions?

The marriage certificate should be found at the The National Archives of Norway (Riksarkivet, http://www.arkivverket.no/english/about.html), which have online scanned databases of allmost all church books in Norway, dating back several hundred years.
One problem though, is that the images are not indexed, so you can't do a search, you'll have to know where to look...
You can do a guess though...
1. Ole Christensen is born around 1818-1820 in Hedmark county 2. Berthe Marie Jacobsdatter looks to be born in 1830 in Gjerdrum, Akershus county. 3. Their first son Hans was born Jan 31 1854 and christened in Aker church, Oslo. 4. Their first daughter Karen was also christened in Aker church (1856).
So did they also marry there?
The online records for Oslo can be viewed here.
It's possibly they married in Aker church, Oslo, around 1850-1854, so it could be of great value to scan through those images. But it could also be another church, depending where they lived in at the time of the marriage. A possibility could be Gjerdrum, Akershus county, where the bride was born, or somewhere else in Oslo.

Yes Jan Peter, I did search both marriage and birth records to some extent but did not find any. Now that you have found Berthe Marias birth and seing the note "meddelt flytting til Aker 10/11 45", we may have better luck, - Berthe Maria Jacobsdatter confirmed in Aker April 19 1846, see #48 Berthe Marias father Jacob Hermandsen in 1801 his mother Berte Erichsdatter was a widow. She was Berthe Marias grandfather Herman Hansens second wife, the mother of Jacob, but not Gulbjør - her mother was Kirsti Erichsdatter.

Hi Jan Peter and Einar. I have also been looking into the same records, Oslo and Gjerdrum, but no luck so fare. Also the LDS records don´t give any answeres, it seems like they married between 1850-54.
Hedmark are consisting of 30 municipalities.

Well done Kaare, one snag though, they did not marry june 1, that was the third lysning, as I see it they were married Sept 14 1851. The marriage record is #111 Looks like we are a litlle different on the birth date of Ole as well, I see it as Jan 7, see third to the last record on the left hand page here

Christen Olsen and Inger Hansdatter married March 29 1816, see #7 Christen Olsen came from vestre lille Tindstad and was 22 years old, Inger Hansdatter was 25 years old and came from Røne. In 1801 Inger was on Stabrud with her parents and siblings, see here Ole was with his parents on Engelaug vestre in 1801
