Hi! I'm hoping you lovely people can help my husband and I! We are researching his family tree and have found it traces back to Norway. This is the information we have so far:
Christian Severin Nilsen was a sea-man born around 1849. We think he married his wife Walborg in Norway before coming over to the UK (Liverpool). Our first record of them in the UK is the birth certificate of their first child Ruldolph Nilsen in 1879. On this record Walborg is listed as 'Walborg Elizabeth Nilsen formerly Rekvoldsen'.
Obviously it would be great if we could delve deeper into the family history, but we have no idea of how/where to start with the Norwegian records! Any help you give would be VERY gratefully received!
Many thanks in advance! |

"Walborg Elisabeth Rikvoldsen" ia quite a unique name, even in Norway, so there's no doubt that she is the right one. But "Christian Severin Nilsen" is/was quite common, so he's harder to locate. One problem is that he might be listed without his middle name in the 1865-census. And there's about 70 men named Christian Nilsen born 1848-1850 in that census...
This is a very wild shot, so consider it just a "guess" so far:
Christian Severin Nilsen Born 03 JUL 1850 Christening: 13 JUL 1850, Birkenes, Aust-Agder Parents: Nils Olsen Røinaas & Inger Severine Christiansdatter Source information: Aust-Agder county, Birkenes, Parish register copy nr. B 2 (1849-1876), Birth and baptism records 1850, page 6.
Census-1865
Siblings of this Christian Severin are: Odine Bergethe (13) Ingeborg Amalia (8) Nils Jørgen (4) Josefine Gurine (1)
What's the names of Christian and Walborg's children, besides Ruldolph?

Thank you so much for that information! You have made my day! I'm a very happy person now! Based on the english census information we have for Walborg, we'd estimate her birth to be about 1850, so that must be her!
Walborg and Christian had four children that we know about: Ruldoph, born in 1879 August, born in 1884 Christian, born in 1886 Clara (we have no records of her, but a family member can vaguely remember her)
Thank you again!
Sarah and Carl Nelson.

Should add that this Christian Severin Nilsen from Birkenes, Aust-Agder is just a wild shot so far. Even though it's not too far apart, it's still quite a distance between Birkenes and Halden. It was not common to find a spouse so far away in those days...
I think a marriage record for Christian and Walborg is needed, to proceed with Christian Severin...

I have just discovered that Christian and Walborg got married in the UK, in 1876. I had assumed they had married before coming to the UK, but mayeb they met over here? Unfortunately I am unable to view the certificate online, I have to order it and wait for a copy to be posted to me, but hopefully in about 10 days I should be able to confirm christians fathers name.
Many thanks for your time and help so far in this project, I really do appreciate it! |

Hello again!
The marriage certificate for Christian and Walborg arrived today - here is the information from it...unfortunately the writing is rather bad, so this is just what I can make out:
Marriage: August 26th 1871 in St Michaels Church, Liverpool
Christigan Severen Nilson (assuming this is bad spelling of christian severin), age 27. Unmarried. His job was a mariner. Fathers name: Nils Anders Nilsen (this may also be Andreas) - but its definately Nils and Nilsen. The middle name definately starts with 'And' and may end 'rs' - but the middle section is unclear. He was dead by this time, but when alive he was a farmer.
Walborg Elizabet Rekvoldsen, age 25. Unmarried. No job. Fathers name: Rekvoldsen Heljeson (I'm assuming this is the person you found earlier, but the name has been spelt incorrectly on the marriage certificate). Her fathers profession was a mariner.
One of the witnesses of the marriage was Hans Rekvoldsen - presumably Walborgs brother that was identified on an earlier census. - That, along with the information on her father confirms shes definately the one you found!
Any further information you could give us on Christians father would be most helpful!
Many thanks,
Sarah and Carl Nelson |

Hi Sarah & Carl, I was delighted to find someone tracing Rekvoldsen!!! I put the name on Google and it came up with the Norway Heritage Community. How many generations back from Carl are Walborg and Christian Nilson? My interest in Rekvoldsen started around 6 years ago when I found my maternal grandad in the 1901 census in Birkenhead with his wife and 2 children, plus Walburg Drennan aged 28, widow, and Mabel Drennan, aged 3 - both stated as being "cousin" to the head of the household. With the aid of birth and marriage certificates I discovered that Walburg was the

With the aid of birth and marriage certificates I discovered that Walburg was the daughter of Hans Olaus Rekvoldsen - Hans was, I think, the brother of Walborg Elisabet Rekvoldsen. I've lots of info in the censuses and burial records etc. The family was firmly based in Liverpool - as I am. Where are you? I was doing some more research on the Drennans after some time, when I decided to put Rekvoldsen on Google - I'm glad I did now !!! Would really like to hear from you! Cath Davies P.S. The entries in the Norwegian Registers are amazing to see - I'm thrilled to have access to these because of your efforts! |
