My Gt grandfather Iver Nielssen (Brustad) was born on the island of Ytteroy - near Levanger. He left Norway to live in Swansea (UK). ONe of his brother, Sivert Zacahariason (Brustad/Kjolsvig) married Anna Jonetta in 1885 in Trondheim. They then emigrated to USA. Sivert's parents were Simon Nielssen Brustad and Margrethe Olsdatter bapt 1794/5. Where, I don't know. Another relative, Peter Olaf Gustav Olsen, son of Niels Peter Olsen and Anne Russine Nielsen (Brustad) also emigrated to USA. Peter was born on 31/07/1861 in Ytteroy. He emigrated on 06/09/1881.
As I don't know where they sailed from or on which ship or where they settled, how do I go about tracing records for them in the USA.
Many thanks

Sivert Zachariassen Brustad (born 1838 in Ytterøy and confirmed 1855 in Ytterøy) married Anne Jonetta Johnsdatter in the Trondheim cathedral church on 31 May 1885. His marriage record lists his father's name as Zacharias Nilsen.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=8&filnamn=VI16011877d&gardpostnr=471&sokefelt=skjul

Sivert was confirmed in Ytterøy on 16 Sep 1855 and that record lists his parents as Zaccharias (no patronymic given) Kjølsvig and Beret Sivertsdtr. The confirmation record shows his birth as 11 Aug 1838.

Sivert's birth/baptismal record is found in Ytterøy recording his birth as 11 Aug 1838, parents Zacharias Nilsen and Berith Sivertsdtr of the Kjølsvig farm.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=DP17221817a&gardpostnr=525&sokefelt=skjul

The closest port of departure in Norway would have been Trondheim.

The USA is a huge country and you don't know what names these persons may have used there. Probably still too little solid information to start that search.

- naming practice not followed?

If the last name was Zacahariaseon (Zachariasen or Sakariasen) a candidate was born Aug 11 1838, see #9
Kildeinformasjon: Nord-Trøndelag fylke, Ytterøy i Ytterøy, Ministerialbok nr. 722A04 (1817-1842), Fødte og døpte 1838-1839, side 126-127.

Whether your gt grandfather Iver Nielsen is his brother can only be checked out with birth/baptism record when dates for this is known.

Hi,

In the Trondhjem emigrants database at the digitalarkiverket, there was a couple named Sivert Brustad and wife Anna leaving Norway in 1892 with a a destination of Minneapolis, Minnesota:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=26&filnamn=EMITROND&gardpostnr=71356&merk=71356#ovre

In the 1801 Norwegian census on Brustad in Ytterøe there is a 6 year old named Simon Nielsen:

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=5&filnamn=f1801&gardpostnr=51598&merk=51598#ovre

In the 1865 Norwegian census online on Lillikjøsvik there is a family headed by Sakarias Nielsen, including such children as Sivert Sakariason and Iver Sakariason (age 14 b. Ytterøen), is this yours?:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f61722&gardpostnr=105&personpostnr=817&merk=817#ovre

You will want to make sure that these folks are the ones you seek--was your Iver actually a Zachariason or brother or son to Zacharias Nielson or ? ...

Very many thanks to those who have replied to my posting. I have found many ancestors on Ytteroy by using the scanned records available online. But I don't speak, read or write Norwegian! I have had to use my commonsense, and, I hope in most cases I have the right family. I have written letters that prove that my great grandfather was Iver Zachariason (though known in the UK as John Brustad Neilson!) Brustad.
The evidence that Sivert and Anna went to Minneapolis is great news. I will search records for them in the USA.
Many thanks to all.

Hi,

You may also want to look at other places in US besides Minnesota. Here is a death record for an Anna Brustad whose age is about right (within 10 years of her age given in the marriage record in Trondheim):

http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Record/View/50C8E9BE9DC79C411F8320D4DDD886B9

Here is a copy of an entry for a Severt Brustad from the North Dakota Public Death Index online:

BRUSTAD, SEVERT 12/30/1914 Walsh MALE 76 Years 99/99/9999 North Dakota Walsh

This Siver Brustad, wife Anna and a son named Anton Brustad are living in Walsh county, North Dakota in the 1910 US Federal census. The son Anton is aged 47, single, and Siver and Anna have been each married 1 time for 24 years, Anna is the mother of 1 child and 1 child living.

You will also want to take a look at the snippets from 1913-1915 in the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald concerning the sad details concerning Siver's end at the historical newspapers section of www.genealogybank.com. Apparently a death notice of some sort for Anna at the same site, Washington state newspapers.

Good Luck,

Jackie M.

My Great Great Grandmother was Gurine of Gurin Johnson b 1857 in Norway d Aug 7, 1933. Her mother, my 3x Great Grandmother, was Anna Brustad b Mar 1, 1834 in Norway d. Jul 16, 1936 at age 102. I just found this site and this information pertaining to her. I have had such a hard time finding anything out because my Mom does not know name date or places of any of them even her grandmother, Ethel Edwina Johnson b May 28, 1888 in Ashland Wisconsin, d Feb 1969 in Oregon and so I am having to guess, check it out; glean; go back or go forward! Nor do I know how to navigate Documents from Norway and I also do not understand the naming of children thoroughly, I get some of it but to try to find women especially if difficult for me.
I am not clear how this family got to the US from Norway. I know they first went to Wisconsin, then Minnesota, then North Dakota, then to the Pacific Northwest and were in Washington State and Oregon.
I have a partial news article about Anna Brustad being the oldest person in La Conner Washington. It includes a photo of her at that time! My mother gave it to me and I have it on file if someone wants it.
I also found in digital archives of Washington State Dept of Health, death information for her. It states that her father was John Stuckey, can someone tell me if Stuckey the same as the Norwegian Stokke?
I would love to see someone's tree that has these people in it or even Anna's ancestors!
My mother is about to turn 90 in Aug and I have been trying together great information for her!!
Are any of you my relatives? Please let me know, I have been searching all of my DNA matches from Scandinavia always looking for these connections.
All for now. would love to hear from some of you! I will thoroughly go through the information from these pages and see what more I can glean.
Thank you so much!
Nancy

Grand Forks Daily Herald Friday, Jan 08, 1915 Grand Forks, ND
Vol: XXXIV Issue: 62 Page Three

"County Charge Died S. Brustad, Walsh county cripple, Passes away, born in Norway

Grafton N.D. Jan 7--Severt Brustad died at the home of Mrs. A Seliken of the infirmities incidental to old age. He was born in Norway August 19, 1836 and has been a resident of this township for the past dozen years. He was badly crippled with rheumatism and unable to work and for the greater part of his residence here has been a public charge.

His son died at the insane hospital at Jamestown a few years ago He is survived by his widow who resides in Minnesota."

Fargo forum and daily republican Tuesday, Mar 18, 1913
Fargo, ND Page: 3 col 2

"Deserts her husband and son, both lying ill and helpless in home.

Grafton N.D. March 18--Two men, one broken and helpless with weight of years, the other insane from five years in bed as a result of paralysis were deserted by a woman in their home near Grafton, where a nurse employed by Walsh county found them.

Mrs J Brustad, evidently broken in health herself as a result of her long fight in caring for her husband and son, is the missing woman.

Mr. Brustad was sent by Walsh county officials to the poor farm at Park River, while the other man Anton Lee, her son by a former marriage, was committed to the asylum for the insane at Jamestown.

The wife and mother had ministered to the wants of the two men for many years until the weight had become too great. Her son had been paralyzed during the last five years, and had been entirely helpless."

Here is the son's death from the North Dakota Public Death Index:
Name (Last, First Middle) Date of Death County of Death Gender Age Date of Birth State of Residence County of Residence
LEE, ANTON 03/28/1913 Stutsman MALE 55 Years 99/99/9999 North Dakota Walsh
