I have been trying to track down Hjordis Sylfride Juliane Pettersen (b.8 Feb 1899 in Oslo, Norway, d.28 Jul 1973 in St. Edouard, Alberta). Her mother was Julia Pettersen F. Kristiansen, a widow and laundry worker who likely came from the Drammen area. Hjordis’ baptismal certificate from the Jacobs Congregation in Oslo on Feb 26, 1899 shows the father to be Jens Hansen Smedstad (may have been born in 1853), a single man, common laborer. The parents’ address was Smestad, Gjerdrum and Jens was employed by Antwort, Storgd.15 and we believe Julia at Maribogd. 8.
Any further information on either Jens or Julia has not been fruitful. However, I did come across information in the Norwegian Digital Archives at the link below. I wondered whether this could be Hjordis, but with a different spelling. The reference in the bottom right next to her name loosely translates as “Daughter of No 2 applied later” from what I can gather. Allegedly, Hjordis had a half-sister named Olga and Hjordis’ year of birth listed is 1899, which is also similar.

Julia and Hjordis left Norway without Jens when Hjordis was between 6 years old and landed in the Osakis, MN area where she met and married John Rodvold. She died about 2 years after they married. From what is known, Julia’s husband was a brother to Joe Swedgan/Olsen's wife (Joe may have been short for John). I have been unable to find any reference to Julia, John, or any sort of marriage documents or death certificates in the Osakis area.
Below is another link to a ship’s record that shows a J Pettersen and H Pettersen travelling to Chicago on the Corsican in 1907, but I am unsure if these people are Julie and Hjordis.

Hjordis married Iver Svedjan (b. Feb 22, 1885 in Meraker, d. Sep 6 1961 in St. Paul, Alberta), brother to John Olsen Svedjan, in Osakis, MN on Aug 4, 1917. I have solid information from that point forward.

Most likely Jens Hansen in 1865.
Jens born Febr 2 1853, parents were then living on nordre Braadal, see #13.
When Hjørdis was born Jens and Julia were not married. In the 1900 census from Drammen Julia is shown as a married woman, who she was married to is not shown.

Okay this is from MOMS (Minnesota marriages)www.mncounty.com: TODD MG-383 9/23/1905 RODVOLD, JOHN S JOHNSON, JULIE
Don't know if this is your couple or not.
And this may be her death record at familysearch:

I hope you harvested when it was available as the link is no longer functional in 2019. |

Ship: SS Teutonic Departure: Liverpool, May 17, 1905 Arrival: New York, May 25, 1905 0023. Christiansen Buness, Julia F 43y W Norway, Norwegian Drammen 0024. Buness, Hjordis F 6y S Norway, Norwegian Drammen Julia's destination is brother Olaf Bunæss in Osakis, MN.
Carl B??næs in census-1900 must be her brother. This must be Julia in census-1865. Parents are Kristian Jenssen & Olea Kristensdatter.

Possibly her brother Olaf Bunæss in census-1900. He is listed as born April 1868. Possibly a transcription error. Julia's brother Olaf is born April 8th, 1864. Julie is born May 17th, 1862.

If Carl were her brother, would there be a reason why his surname would not have been listed as Kristiansen instead of Bunæss?

I am interested in contacting anyone who may have more information about the family. It has been a dead end for some time.

Kevin,
If your research in US indicates that your Olaf (or Ole) Buness is the same man as the one I'm posting of findings in the 1905 and 1895 Minnesota state censuses, I know of a family in Canada (descendants of this Olaf) who would probably like some contact, if you are interested in that:
Olaf J. Buness 1905 Minnesota census: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-159388-129096-80?cc=1503056

Apparently, Hjordis had a half-sister named Olga, shown on this census. I haven't been able to find any information on the Petter or Pettersen that may be their biological father.

Such variations in name are not uncommon. Perhaps she is found as Julia Johnson in the marriage records because someone asked what her father's name was and since his last name was Johnson--it was assumed hers was Johnson--since Yanks inherit their surnames from their father. Usually in time gone by in Norway a farm name like Bunæs, was only used while you lived on that farm. If you lived somewhere else you usually took the name of that place for the duration. But these sorts of customs undergo transformation all the time. |
