Hey Guys- New to the forums but I have seen what you guys have done with other members and I want to first say thank you for all of your hard work. It is you senior and veteran members who really help preserve genealogy for us. Thank you again.
Here is my favor. I am looking for a man and I can give some information and hopefully someone can pull a miracle for me. His name is Svend Everson. This was his Norwegian name. He was born around April 1863 according to census records. He immigrated to America at age 16. I am guessing 1879ish. He was a twin. His twin brother died at a young age. His father left the family I guess when he was young. Records say he was born in Norway but no specific location. When he came to America, I think he came to Minnesota. His name here was Americanized to Sven Iverson. Any help on this would be great. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon. |

Hi,
This is from the online Minnesota Death Index at www.mnhs.org:
IVERSON, SVEND Date of Birth: na Place of Birth: na Mother Maiden Name: na certid# 1942-MN-012634 Date of Death: 16 Jul 1942 County of Death: REDWOOD
and here is the take on that same person in the Minnesota Deaths and Burials database at www.familysearch.org:
Name: Svend Iverson Gender: Male Burial Date: Burial Place: Death Date: 16 Jul 1942 Death Place: Lamberton, Redwood, Minnesota Age: 79 Birth Date: 1863 Birthplace: Occupation: Race: Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Lisa Stendalen Father's Name: Iver Iverson Father's Birthplace: Mother's Name: Mother's Birthplace: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: B02557-4 System Origin: Minnesota-EASy Source Film Number: 2243458 Reference Number: cn 12634
The birthyear indicates a possible match. This person could be looked for in the 1865 Norwegian census online.

That is the person. I have all the death information. The information I provided is from the wife of his son. She made a biography of the history and I also have an audio tape from one of his sons who gives the information. I am hoping someone could provide me with where this man came from in Norway. I know he's from Norway, I am looking for where? who was his mother and father? what was his twins brothers name, etc. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. His wife was Lisa "Lizzie" Stendahlen. She had been researched on here before.

Hi,
Okay, well there are lots of Hallings in Cottonwood Redwood County--just a suggestion...
To help narrow and solidify the facts, here is his marriage to Lisa:
COTTONWOOD M2-333 2/19/1888 IVERSON, SWAN OLSEN, LISA

Thanks jkmarler. Cottenwood County is where he lived and is also buried. He was buried in Old Westbrook Cemetery in Redwood, Minnesota. he did live in Cottenwood county, Minnesota most of his life. I tried doing a search in the 1865 Norwegian census and did not find any information. I currently have all information when he lived in America. I am hoping to find information on his twin brother or other siblings. His mother and father. Also, I saw that it listed his father as Iver Iverson. This is new to me as I did not know his fathers name. Any information where he resided? birth and/or death? wife, etc.
Lisa Olsen Swan. The Swan confuses me. He married Lisa Olsen Stendahlen. So the Swan is throwing me off. Could be a typo.

Hi,
According to the 1900 census Svend's year of migration looks like 1883.
There are many spellings possible of the name Svend--just a few I've seen are Sven, Svein, Svedjn, Sveind, When you searched the census did you look only for Svend?

he had many Names. According to his kids...all now passed away. They recorded in their biography's that his Norweigan name was Svend Everson, Then he became Sven Iverson when he came to America, Later he was known as Swen Iverson, then Smen Iverson..... I know, weird. How many first names do ya need? Those are recorded by his kids and grandkids. The record shows that he immigrated around 1883, the thing that I am stuck on is according to one of his grandkids, he immigrated at age 16 which would be 1879. I am wondering if 1883 was the year he was nationalized and when they did the census count, maybe he told them when he was nationalized? Possible?

Hi,
The first census in Minnesota that he might be on (after 1883) would be 1885 Minnesota state census, the 1895 Minnesota state census would be next. All the Minnesota state censuses are indexed and searchable free on www.greatriversnetwork.com. The images are not available there however, you would need to have someone look who carries an Ancestry subscription. This is only to nail down some facts about Svend.
In the 1900 census, his year of migration is given as 1883, that he lived in US for 17 years and that his citizenship papers have been filed--a necessary condition to take a Federal land Homestead was that the declaration of intention had been filed.
I copied all the information there was in the two death databases for Svend. It's possible, but not likely, that other information is on the actual certificate but just not collected for the databases.

Hi,
Well I've looked at the 1865 census and have come down with 4 possibles. Starting with a name that begins with sve, and a last name that begins with iv and a birthyear of 1861,1862, 1863, 1864, 1865. You could also do this same search with the last name starting with ev instead of iv.

Here is a possible baptism for this Svend from Norway Baptisms at www.familysearch.org:
Name: Svein Iversen Gender: Male Baptism/Christening Date: 18 Jun 1862 Baptism/Christening Place: Nore, Buskerud, Norway Birth Date: 06 Apr 1862 Birth Place: Death Date: Name Note: Race: Father's Name: Iver Sveinsen Skarpaasen Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name: Brynild Halvorsdatter Mother's Birthplace: Mother's Age: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C86604-1 System Origin: Norway-EASy Source Film Number: 1282535 Reference Number: b 4 p 47 #42
Interesting to see an April birthdate but in 1862.

The birthplace parish for each of these are given, along with the parents' names (except for Buskerud listing, father is apparently deceased)
Next step is to look in the parish registers covering the dates for Svend's birth.
Good Luck!

I checked those records, I am looking for a family with a twin brother. I did not see those in the selections you gave me. Could you possibly run a check on the "ev" surname and see if we get any hits?

Hi,
There are no Everson, one Evertson age 14 so a bit too old.
Please consider that Svend might be the survivor of a set of twins--the twin might not be alive for the 1865 census. The only way to be sure for any of these is to check in the parish register to see if any of these were part of a set of twins.

Yeah, problem is is that I have no idea which parish he came from. Here is a quick question, I have checked Ancestory.com for any immigration on him and I can not find anything even close. With both surnames. Any ideas where to go from here? |

Hello,
Yes, since there doesn't seem to be an instantly successful answer for you right now, you can slog through the parish registers listed for each of the possibles mentioned before. These are Oiers, Aurdal, Aals, Skoue! The records are all online at the Norwegian digital archives.
Sometimes records in US help to narrow Norwegian searches. Svend's marriage record, particularly if conducted in church, might contain his home parish and his parents' names. Ditto his funeral record in the church.
