I am sending a link to flikr where I uploaded a document that gives the location of the farm where my father Hans Solo lived before his mother Martha Solo moved to America. They entered Canada in 1906 then moved to Minnesota. I would like to find out where the farm was located in Norway and if any of my relatives still live there. My grandfather died in Norway and I don't know anything about him. Rebecca (Solo) Brandt

Hi,

Hans Emil and his parents and siblings on Solø in 1865:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=f61843&gardpostnr=140&personpostnr=887&merk=887#ovre

Apparently a younger brother had Solø in 1910:

This record of the arrival of the familiy into Canada shows the following family members.

Levia age 25
Elana age 16

It would appear that two of the family member did not make the trip. That would be Jenny, and Olaf. Alfred was on the list departing from Bodin but I have not found him on the ship.

Name: Hans Solor

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1898
Date of Arrival: 21 Jul 1906
Vessel: Ionian
Search Ship Database: View the 'Ionian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: Montreal, Quebec
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

Rebecca, are you aware of the Famly Tree on Ancestry.com. The title of the tree is Solo-Ruidl Family Tree and is the property of andersonecdinc. It is quite detailed.

A big THANK YOU to all of you who so unselfishly donate your time to help us who live far from Norway and hunger for all the information we can get. Ancestry.com is a wonderful resource but is too costly for many of us. I have used Ancestry at the library where I work as a clerk but the library edition is limited. It doesn't allow access to Family Trees. I found out that another clerk does have the full version and is willing to share information with me. She is quite busy with other projects but I can wait a bit longer. It is very exciting. She shared a few tid-bits and I discovered that I have some information that the compilers of the Solo-Ruidl Family Tree don't have. It would be fun to make contact with them at some point.
This is actually my second visit to Norway Heritage, My life became complicated with work and illness so I had to set geneology aside for a while. I found this site in 2007 and discovered a whole lot of information, including pictures of the two ships my grandmother and her children took to Canada. When I started I only knew my family name Solø came from the farm they lived on in Norway which had a lake with an island in the middle of it and meant "Suns Eye". I wouldn't know anything else without Norway Heritage.
Once more: Thank you all very much.
Rebecca

Your Grandfather (really?) Hans Emil Olsen was born June 7 1846, see #119.
Ole Hansen and Ingeborg Nilsdatter were engaged to be married April 10 1846, see #4.
Ole Hansen was born in Waage parish and his father was Hans Halvorsen.
Ingeborg Nilsdatter was born Vangen parish, Voss and her father was Nils Pedersen.
Ingeborgs baptismal record is #2 on right page.

hI.
You are right about the lake, it´s called "Soløyvatnet" Lake Soløy, actually there are two islands in the lake, Kalvøya (Calf island) and the smaller Musøya (Mouse island)
Farm Solø/Soløy is at the northern shore of the lake.

View the farm and the lake in this map, spell "soløya bodø" and enter SØK.

Good luck.

Kåarto! Yea! I remember you from the last time I visited Norway Heritage. I was wondering if you were still around. I love the map you sent a link to. I cried so hard when I saw Soløy close up that I couldn't see the screen and had to walk away for a while. I feel my heart and soul live there One of my older sisters told me that when I was very young I kept asking when we were going back to the old house. I never lived in any other house than the one I lived in from my birth until I left home at the age of 23. I truly believe I have a genetic memory of Soløyvatnet. I live in Forest Lake, MN and it is about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Lake Superior. I don't get up there very often (it's been about 3 years now), but I feel more peace and serenity there than any other place. I think it brings back a feeling and deep down memory of Soløyvatnet. I was lucky to see the Rocky mountains a couple of times and I felt the same there. In my soul, I am not a flat-lander.
Yes eibache. My grandfather is/was Hans Emil Olsen. My father, Hans Emil Martin Solo, was the youngest in his family and I was the youngest in mine. Mom was 40 and dad was 50 when I was born in 1948. Dad, born in 1898 lived until the age of 61 when he died of cancer. I was born in 1948 and am now 63 years old. Lord only knows why I'm still on the "green side up" part of the earth. I certainly haven't lived a particularly healthy life style. I consider each day a gift.
I simply love each and every one of you for the wonderful work you do. I'm hugging all of you. Can you feel it?

Ole Hansen, Olstadeie moved out of Vågå, Hedmark to "Nordlandene" Nov 21 1845, see #29.

Niels Pedersen, Lille Rokne and Ingebiør Siursdatter, Rondve were married Oct 10 1815, see next to the last record.

Niels Pedersen, his parents and siblings in 1801.

Now I remember your last topic Rebecca, from 2007.
Internet is a blessing in genealogy.
Touching to read about your feelings.

The em. from Bødø via Trondheim in 1906 on ship Tasso tells that Martha Helmine, widow and farmers wife brought her children with her. Dest. for the mother Martha Helmine, Hilda 1895, Hans 1898 and Halfdan 1893 were Clenton Jc. Wisc.
For the three other children going with her Lovisa 1881, Anna 1890 and Hilmar 1886 dest; Nevis Minnesota.
All tickets were paid for in Trondheim, see here

The present owner of Soløya, Morten E. Carlsen has no e-mail adress.

Your explonation of Solø/Soløy to be Suns Eye is almost correct, Øye means Eye but Ø/Øy/Øya means island, Sun island.

Off the record; Halfdan is an old Norse name and means Half Dane (Half Danish)

Hi,

Hans Olsen's younger brother Kornelius who was on Solø in 1910, didn't last much longer than that, here from DIS gravminner:

http://www.disnorge.no/gravminner/bilde.php?id=2688643

And there is another stone if you search for Solø, of a Gunnar who died in a camp in Germany during the War...might be an interesting story in your relationship if he belongs to your family.
