Looking for any information on Olaf Borresen born 30/10/1858 in Fredrikstad near Oslo. His father may have been Martin Jansen or Jensen? & mother Berthe Marie Olsdatter. Brothers Hans (my g/grandfather) b29/19/1860 came to Australia, & Anton Borresen b 13/3/1863 stayed in Norway I believe. Olaf may be a step brother. I am told he went to America perhaps dying in San Francisco about 1930. Any information on immigration would be appreciated. Thank you. Janie

If Olaf was a step brother, it might explain the Borresen (Børresen?) surname. Funny thing is, there is a Martin Jansen married to Berthe M. Olsdatter living in Fredrikstad in the 1865 census. However, their children are listed as Johan, Theodor and Karl....all with the natural patronym surname Martinsen/Martinson. What surname did your ggf use ? |

Hi, This Olaf Børresen looks to be same as this Ole Børresen in the 1865-census.
See also the topic about Anton Borresen.
This could be Olaf/Ole emigrating in 1904: click here

Thanks jwiborg. That could be Olaf/Ole Borresen on Emigrants from Oslo 1867-1930 The age would be close. What sort of occupation is a Sjomand, Styrmand? If his residence is listed as Amerika & destination, New York obviously he has come back to Norway for a visit? |

my grandmothers father was named olaf borresen. agnes borresen was an only child and both her parents were only children... which may give way to step-brothers/sisters to olaf. My grandmother traveled the globe with her father olaf, he was captain of the "rackel" I believe (I will confirm soon). My grandmother was born in late 1890's in Stavanger and emigrated to long island,ny in 1922. I have a painting of the "rackel" and I will be more than happy to send photos. I searched the web and found one voyage of olaf in 1905. My sister has the chest my grandmother emigrated to the u.s. with (on the s.s. stavangerfjord). I will also take photos of it. (it has stamps of many ports she and olaf traveled to) I live in Long Island n.y. Agnes married Rasmus Vik and had 4 children. I will confirm more names and dates soon. |

my aunt gives the spelling as olav not olaf. he was married to Ingagorina jonsen. he sailed out of stavanger. I also have a photograph of the both of them. olav borresen and ingagorina jonsen were only children who gave birth to my grandmother Agnes Borresen-their only child. Olav died in an accident at sea, I will try to confirm where he was burried, and if the ship was named the "rackel" for sure |

olaf borresen was capt. of the sjogutten. I have recieved the painting which hung inside a bedroom of my aunts house for 80 yrs. the name is pretty clearly written on the ship, please disregard any references to the ship "rackel" at this time. apparntly long after my great-grandfather was captain, the ship escaped from nazi occupied norway on may 6 1940 with 19 on board leaving from Fosnavag norway. An air force capt. and his crew would later help start the Norwegian Air Force in London. skipper/owner during that time was Peder g Remoy, perhapsa relative of the Remoy ceramics co. family based in Fosnavag, it is one of Norways largest companies today. |

apparently, back in the day... sea captains may have had many ships, just as airline pilots today fly different planes. both the rackel and sjogutten were ships he may have used as well as another ship I located at ancestry dot-com which also lists his crew |

Hi, Rackel, The bark "Rackel" was the last sailingvessel bought by E.Berensen. Capt. L. Børresen was a captain of this ship from 1894 to February 1908 when the ship was sold to Finland.
I hope this can help you.
best regards, EllenW |
