Hi Again, Yes I agree with you they would be interesting reading, if only I could read them. I had a contact in Norway who was going to translate them for me, I tried scanning them (they would not scan very well and then I lost his email address). I would be prepared to photo copy the letters and send them to someone (via snail mail) in Norway for translation (possibibly Borge) and even let any of them be posted on this site should they be of interest to the site. Regards Steve originalof@hotmail.com
Ok, I'll be willing to have a go at it, send me the the copies any way it will work for you. I will let you know more when I see the copies. |

Odd, I sent off some letters to some people that had the same last name as the farm, Prestvik, that my Great Great Grandfather was born on. I discovered a lady in Kolvereid with the same last name as the farm, Garmannvik, that his wife was from. And I sent one off to a guy here in the US in Montana that is a distant relative.... I'll see who responds. Miles :)

Odd & Anne, I had sent some letters to people with the same last name as my Great Great Grandfathers last name of Prestvik, but have not heard from anyone yet. I found the last name of a lady with the same last name as my Great Great Grandmother, Garmannvik, and was thrilled to have received an email from her daughter. Hopefully we can find out if we are related. Miles |

Odd, I was very happy to have received an email from a relative with the Prestvik name. As it turns out he & I share the same May 26th birthday... just a couple years apart. His Great Grandfather was the man that had inherited the family farm & was the older brother to my Great Great Grandfather!! Miles :) |

For everyone who has done family research, I wish for you the same incredible results that we had achieved this year. If you have read the previous pages of what I have shared, you will see that my search began very basic, I was happy for the information that I had, but wondered if I had even a single cousin in Norway. I explored the Norwegian on-line white pages and found a few people with the farm names of Prestvik & Garmannvik. I wrote letters and was happy to receive a couple of responses. As it turned out, one of the contacts lived just 2 kilometers from the original home place of Prestvika. That was truly exciting and was the beginning for many emails and a great friendship. This expanded through emails to include contact with members of the Garmannvik side. I (we) were delighted. In June of this year I placed a historic phone call to a cousin of mine that was in America for a short period of time. I had estimated that it had been 139 years since someone of this "branch" had spoken to anyone from the "family" back home... It was incredible!! Having expanded my search to included other areas of Norway for people with the Prestvik name, I made contact with a (4th)cousin in Oslo. Emails were shared and we were invited to a family reunion in the Rondane Mountains in August. The invitation was too good to refuse...... Norway was calling.... Our trip was for 2 weeks. We visited the original home places of my Great Great Grandparents, met several relatives in the Rorvik area, took a fjord tour, were interviewed by a newspaper man, and had our pictures and information published in the paper. WOW!! Out trip included the historic city of Trondheim. We headed southward to the area of Oppdal and were given a tour by another cousin. What a beautiful area!! As I understand, the "Trolls" originated there. Our trip continued another 2 hours south until we arrived at a lodge in the mountians. We met several relatives and the following day we hiked up to the top of a mountain led by a 84 year old cousin.... I have to say that the people in Norway are very healthy.... Her english was very good, her smiles unforgetable, and her laughter priceless. We passed her test & were declared to be "True Vikings." In all, we met 41 relatives on our "adventure:. Our lives are forever enriched from this experience. The pictures and video that I collected are being put into a DVD for all of my relatives as a Christmas gift this year and the information that I have collected for 30+ years will be provided to everyone as a CD also. I wish for everyone success with their research and finding your "roots". I fulfilled a dream that my grandmother had years ago..... to visit Norway and see the birthplace of her grandparents. Thank you to everyone that helped us!! God Bless you all....... |

I am so happy to be back here and I see that my last posting was 2006. I have utilized Facebook for finding my many distant cousins around the world. To date I have over 70. I have made very many interesting discoveries over the past few years, one especially was finding out that I am related to the singer and song write Jackson Browne. His great grandfather and my great great grandfather were brothers and each born at the Prestvika farm. His inherited the farm and mine sailed to America. I have attended 2 of his concerts here in Minnesota but have not been able to make contact. |

Wow Miles. That is really cool. I've enjoyed so much myself this process, on my dads side, though I'm really still pretty new to my mothers Norwegian side. Take care :) |

Greetings from Minnesota. Through the information available here I was able to discover the name of the ship that my Andreassen ancestors came to America in 1867. THANK YOU!! The Andreassen's were from the Kolvereid parish which was north of Namsos. The oldest brother of Christian Andreassen, Johan Andreassen, inherited the farm of Prestvik back in 1856. The Blomqvist's I have traced back to 1865 and at that time were in the Mo area. They lived in the Nesna area until immigrating to America in 1903. The families settled in the Baldwin & Woodville towns of Wisconsin. My question is this, how might I go about trying to contact some people in Norway that would be able to assist me in seeing if any relatives exist? I had discovered that the "white pages" for the areas in Norway also listed some email addresses. I wrote to several people that had their email addresses listed, but no one responded... Your help is greatly appreciated!!

Hello,
I am wanting to send you an email about our shared ancestors from the Præstvig farm in Kolvereid. The site wouldn't allow me to email you, as I'm a new member. Would you please email me?
Thank you in advance! Dawn Nelson onedawnnelson@yahoo.com |
