I am now researching information on my grandparents of whom I have little info. I am hoping someone can help me. Can anyone find information on my grandmother who was born in Illinois on November 30, 1877. I have obtained different spellings of her parents names. Her father's name has been spelled both as Tulag (Tollof) and Tullack Gaard. Her mother has been listed as both Rachel and as Severina. Suuposedly she was also a Gaard but not related! I question if they could have been living on the same farm while in Norway. They probably married in Norway. The little info I have says that their families came from Stavanger, Norway area. I question if they lived in the Kendall County, Illinois area. I would appreciate any help. I am interested in parents, siblings, dates, emigration date and possibly the ships on which they came to America on. I know I'm asking for lots of information. I will appreciate anything that can be found or if you could direct me to some links that would be helpful. Thanks so much.

Emigration from Stavanger in 1873:

Tollak K. Gaard from Talgje, Finnøy, Rogaland county, Norway. Destination: Elinore, Minnesota. Farmer in the US from 1884. link

Rakel Aske Erikson Gaard is listed on the same page. Emigration 1871. Destination Roland, Ia. Dead 1902

Other Gaard's are also listed on the same page.

Is this your family in the 1880 US census for Lisbon, Kendall, Illinois? Click here

Same family in the the Digital Archives' census: Click here

Is your grandmother the two year old girl in the census? She's named Sena or Lend. (diffenrent names in the two censues)

Head of Household is Thos. GAURD.

Thank you for the previous information. The 1880 census taken in Kendall Co., Ill. is definitely my family. How exciting for me.! Their birthdates are correct on the Illinois census and not on the Family History. On the site of Digitalarkivet: Emigrants from Stavanger, I'm sure that is my g grandfather. Also, probably his brother coming in 1873. I wll try and find a web site to find a census in Norway previous to coming to America. Now I'm sure that is where my grandfather, Carl Larsen of Denmark met my grandmother, Lena Gaard. One place it shows her name as Sena and the other place Lend. But I know that is my grandmother! If there is any place else I can find for info, I would appreciate your help. Thanks so much for what you've given me.

The Norwegian records for the Talgje and Finnøy areas of Rogaland, Norway are pretty well documented in printed histories, etc. (I also have ancestors from Gaard.) Unfortunately many of these published resources are not available for cheap and easy loan on LDS microfilm but are easily useable if you are in the Salt Lake City Library or take efforts to borrow them by Inter-Library loan.
I plan to to spend more time researching my ancestors from Finnøy , Talgje and other nearby island areas in the next year -- perhaps we could consider joining forces. Do have much experience in this type of research?
The church records copied to LDS microfilm are of course about the best primary documentation you can use. Probate records, land and mortgage records and many other resources are available for the area -- check the LDS Library catalog.

Jan and Hopkins,
Thank you for your quick response to my inquiry. I will find a map to find the area of Talgje and Finnøy. I would appreciate working with you Hopkins on researching the Gaard farm but I know you are much more informed than I could ever be! Now I will see if I can find the ship that they traveled on to America.

Finnøy municipality consists of the islands Finnøy, Talgje, Fogn and some other islands further north. 16 of them are inhabited with a total of 2800 people.

Many, many thanks Jan, for the maps of the Talgje area. It is most interesting to me. Can you direct me to the census that would include my g grandmother. We have her listed as Rachel and her father as Sjur and mother Ingaborg. I question if they lived on the same farm as supposedly her last name was also Gaard. I have no birthdates of the family and have that she had a sister named Lena and brothers Servert and Joe. Also while researching last evening I went into the Norway Heritage ship's list looking for their names in the years they emigrated. Neither Tollak or Rachel (Susan) were listed on the name list of emigrants. Is there a reason? Again, thank you!

As usual, Jan Peter provides marvelous maps. Thanks - I always enjoy them.

Carol - There is a published series of Norwegian books about Finnøy by the author Halvard Bjørkvik. A history of Finnøy and farms with a great deal of genealogy about the people who lived there. My notes show that residents of the Gard/Gaard farm on Talgje from approximate time period 1700 to 1750 were found on page 269 in volume 3 of that series. (The time period I was most interested in.) I used those books when I visited the Salt Lake City Family History Library - but they are probably available by Inter-Library Loan through your local public library. Have a good Norwegian-English dictionary already on hand - they are published in Norwegian of course. (But names and basic dates are almost always readable no matter the language.)
The LDS collection has church records for the Finnøy area for the time period as early as 1672 copied to 7 reels of microfilm. Anything they have copied to microfilm or microfiche you can order to be sent to the nearest LDS Family History Center to your home. These usually cost about the same as a fast food lunch for a single microfilm reel loan of about 5-7 weeks. Check at your local LDS Family History Center.

A friend has excellent online articles about Norwegian church records, bygdeboks, using Inter-Library Loan in the US, etc. I always recommend them. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

I am continuing family history on the Gaard family. Does anyone know how I can get into the U. S. census without belonging to a particular web site, for instance, Ancestry.com? I have spent considerable time trying to find information on the Gaard family after arriving in the United States and have not had any success. I am really frustrated! Any suggestions?

Check at your local public library. They often have a "Library version" of ancestry available to patrons using computers in the facility. Be sure to inquire what services they might also offer for card carrying library patrons to be able to use from home.

Also use the Record Search functions available free online through the Mormon's
familysearch.org
website.

If you know WHERE you want to search also browse around online for genealogy websites for particular states and/or counties. Sometimes they will have posted census indexes for their county.
