Hi,
I doubt Magnus Knutsen is related to the family, he is a "logerende" renter, "ug"/ugift-unmarried. He seems to be rather well-to-do, "lever af sine penge" living of his capital. He likely don´t have his own household.

Any ideas on finding out what ship Iver Howick came to America on? I looked at the link containing the info on his Norway departure, but was unable to determine if it stated the name of the ship.

Thank you!

Hi,
Iver Iversen Høvik Øfstedal (25) left Bergen on 26-Mar-1896 with the Allan line, which brought him to Hull, England. No name of the ship mentioned in the online database.

Then most likely train to Liverpool. The departure from Liverpool must have been around April 1st, 1896.

Arrival in New York, Boston, Quebec or Montreal after ab. 10 days of journey, ie. around 10-Apr-1896. Maybe a search in the US or Canadian arrival records could find him and the ship...?

Hi All,

I found an Iver J. Hovik in the Border Crossings from Canada to U.S. Not sure if it's the same Iver Hovik, since the intitial is wrong, but here's the info.

He sailed on the S.S. Laurentian from Liverpool to Halifax. He arrived on April 9, 1896.

It states he was 25 years and 5 months, single, occupation is listed as shoemaker. He is Norwegian and his last residence is listed as Voss. He landed in Halifax and his destination is listed as Whitewater, Wisconsin. He paid for his own passage and he has $7. It states that he isn't going to join a relative and that he hopes to find employment in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

If this is him, send me and e-mail through my profile page and I'll send you the info.

Of course it's him!

Excellent work, Wanda!

Jan Peter

ps: Did he cross the border together with Nils Nilsen Næsthus (24)? They look to have travelled together.

It sure sounds like the same Iver. However, the middle initial is confusing, since his middle name was Edvin.

I was also under the impression that he went straight to South Dakota as an indentured servant, but maybe that's wrong.

Thanks for looking into this. You all are great!

There was not that many 25 year old Iver Hovik's from Voss that emigrated to America in March/April 1896...

The "J" is most likely a transcription error from the original record..., maybe it should read "I"...? Iver Iversen Hovik = Iver I. Hovik...
And S/S Laurentian belonged to The Allan Line..

Yes, that confirms it! Nils Naesthus is traveling with him, though his destination is Wells, Minnesota, since he has an Uncle there.
