Can someone please advise if this is a farm name and if so where I might look to find who was living there from the early 1800's through to 1900. Any help appreciated.

It is most likely a farm name, and I assume it is Grøtterød (Grøterød or Grøterøe) which can be found in Nøtterød (Nøtterøy or Nøtterø) parish in Vesfold.
Census of 1801, 1865 and 1900 could be used to find people living there.
If you are looking for persons with known name and date of birth, you can also search scanned parish records.

More options.
Grøtterud can also be in Lyngdal sub parish in Flesberg parish and municipality in Numedal, Buskerud county or Grotterud/Groterud in Hobøl municipality in Øsfold county.

These are the censuses for Flesberg

Grøtterud/Grøterud farms, if you dont have the letter Ø, use the given name, spell;

Anders in 1801 census, choose nr 2258
Kittil in 1865, nr 2463
Kittil in 1900, nr 2022

There is a 2. Grøtterud farm in 1865 owned by Narve Thoresen (nr 2474) married to Ambjør Helliksdatter.

Good luck.

Grøterud Lyngdal Flesberg Buskerud

Grøterød Tanum Brunlanes Vestfold
Grøterud Ramnes Ramnes Vestfold
Grøterud Vaale Vaale Vestfold
Grøterud Snertingdalen Biri Oppland
Grøterud Eidsberg Eidsberg Østfold

Thanks to all who replied to my question. We do know it was Grotterod in Notteroy. I have tried to get into farms on the 1801, 1865 & 1900 without success. Can anybody advise the best way of doing this? Being in Australia do I have to go to an LDS centre or can it be done on line? Thanks again.

Here is the census for Nøtterøy 1865.
The farm is spelled either Groterød or Grøterød in 1865, Grøtterød in 1810 and Grøtterød in 1900, use farm search on left hand and;
Gard (Farm) - børjar på (starts with) - gr and choose between nr 650-651-652 and 653 from the 1865 register.
Click on "samme område" same areas (blue line on top) and search the other censuses

Good luck, Kåre

Yes! Alan you can also learn how to do this research online.

Here's a website that offers help in learning to use the various databases on the Digitalarkivet website.
Tips on Using the Digitalarkivet

The section entitled "Hints on Searching" will be especially useful for your study.

Most of the church records for Norwegian clerical districts and parishes are also available online now (and still available on LDS microfilm almost anywhere in the world).
The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

Thanks to all again, have been using the digitised records which got us started again after a period of 2-3 years. Much information has been gathered but would still like to know who was living at the farm in those peiods. Will do some more looking and may again call for help.
Thanks again,
Alan.

There are farm books for Notteroy, look up volunteer s here, be sure and read the posting guidelines before asking a question:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/lookups.html#Vestfold

Just google "Notteroy farm books" and Books we own Norway" and more look up volunteers and information will come up.
