Dear All, I am searching for information on Mathilda Thompson. I believe that she emigrated from Norway in 1870 with her parents Oslat and Christine Thompson. Mathilda married Louis Gilbertson (Laurits Gulbrandsen, you folks helped me find his family in the thread "farm name Knain") in Minnesota in 1878, according to the census) and they had five children. My family has a rosmaled trunk that supposedly was brought over by Mathilda, as well as a spinning wheel that (again supposedly) belonged to her sister. The spinning wheel is identical to one that we saw in the Vesterheim museum. Tova, the curator of the Vesterheim, told us that their wheel had come from Stavanger. Our spinning wheel has "HOSM" burned into it. Tova says that this means the name of the maker of the wheel had a first name starting with H, "O" was for the Father, "S" meant he was a son, and the farm name started with "M". We believe they may have emigrated from Christiana, and the trunk (if it was hers) also had writing on it. "Tory" or " Torey" Datter. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated! Sue

Census-1880 for Leavenworth, Brown, Minnesota. She is born ab 1858, according to the "Knain" topic. Lewis and Mathilda have a daughter Annie C. born ab January 1880. Also, Lewis/Louis' sister Mary (18), his brother John (12) and their father Gilbert Larson (60) lives with them.
What is your source(s) for her parents being Oslat and Christine Thompson? Oslat must be transcribed wrongly. That's not a first name, not even in Norway...
I wonder if it could be Aslak? Here is one Aslag Thomson in Leavenworth, Brown, Minnesota, with wife Christene!
Census-1880 for Leavenworth, Brown, Minnesota
Census-1865 for Pytten farm in Bygland, Aust-Agder.
Some children of Aslag Torgussen & Kristi Isaachsdatter: Torbør Aslagsdr Pytten is chr 23 SEP 1856 in Bygland, Aust-Agder Olav Aslagsen Pytten is chr 20 SEP 1857 in Bygland, Aust-Agder Svalaug Aslagsdr Pytten is chr 11 SEP 1859 in Bygland, Aust-Agder
It looks like the same family, but not everything fits. Her age fits, his doesn't. Ole/Olav and Isac's age fits. Svalaug could be Susie? Could Tørberg/Torbør be Mathilda???

1880-census 1865-census Leavenworth, Brown, MN Bygland, Aust-Agder ------------------------------------------------------ Aslag Thomson, b 1834 = Aslag Torgussen, b 1816 Christene Thomson, b 1815 = Kristi Isaachsdr, b 1816 Thomas Thomson, b 1850 = Torgus Aslagsen, b 1850 Evind Aslagsen, b 1853 Tørberg Aslagsdr, b 1855 Ole Thomson, b 1857 = Ole Aslagsen, b 1857 Susie Thomson, b 1860 = Svalaug Aslagsdr, b 1859 Isaac Thomson, b 1864 = Isaach Aslagsen, b 1863
I believe Aslag Thomson's age in the 1880-census should be 64, not 46. Could Tørberg Aslagsdr born 1855 be Mathilda Thompson?
There is no proof that this really is Mathilda Thompson's family, but I find it very likely that "Oslat and Christine Thompson" could be Aslag & Christene Thomson in Leavenworth, Brown, MN, census-1880. And since Mathilda lived in the same township, chances are that they are her parents.
Emigration records should be found...

Good work, eibache!
Mathilda's death certificate where it states she is born July 14th is a very good proof that she is equal to Thorbjørg Aslagsdr from Bygland, Aust-Agder! Her name has also been spelled Tørberg/Torbør, but Thorbjørg (with or without the "h") would be the "correct" spelling.
The family are registered as leaving the parish on May 22nd, 1873. Ole & Isaac Thompson's imigration year is listed as 1874 in the 1900-census for Leavenworth, MN.
I am confindent this is the right family.
I'm wondering who the trunk could have belonged to? The inscription "Tory" or "Torey Datter" could be Torjusdatter. Maybe a sister of Aslach Torjussen? Aslach had two sisters, Gunil and Christie.
Aslach Torjussen Christening: 30 JUN 1816, Bygland, Aust-Agder Parents: Torjus Jonsen & Torbior Aslachsdr
Kristine Lovisa Isachsdr Christening: 16 FEB 1817, Bygland, Aust-Agder Parents: Isach Larsen & Svalaug Aansdr
Children of Torjus Jonsen & Torbior Aslachsdr: Jon Torjussen, chr 13 SEP 1812, Bygland, Aust-Agder Aslach Torjussen, chr 30 JUN 1816, Bygland, Aust-Agder Gunil Torjusdr, chr 04 APR 1820, Bygland, Aust-Agder Niels Torjussen, chr 27 APR 1823, Bygland, Aust-Agder Christie Torjusdr, chr 05 JUN 1827, Bygland, Aust-Agder Ole Torjussen, chr 08 JAN 1831, Bygland, Aust-Agder
Have not found any other children to Isach Larsen & Svalaug Aansdr; Kristine Lovisa looks to be their only child. Jan Peter

Hello everyone and tusen takk for all of your interest and help! The name "Oslat" Thompson comes from oral family history. I do however, have a death certificate for Ole Thompson, (MN, 1935) in which Aslek and Kristine Thompson are listed as his parents. His death certificate lists August 6th, 1857 as his DOB. The informant was Jennie Thompson, whom I believe was his daughter.
My 1910 census lists Mathilda as 52 (born 1858). Her death certificate says she was born 7-14-1856 (informant her son Emil).
Thank you again for your help.
Sue
According to Ole Aslagsen's chr record from Bygland, Aust-Agder, he is born in August 1857. (A bit hard to read the exact day)
Jennie Thompson lives with her father Ole Thompson in Leavenworth, Brown, MN in census-1920. She is born abt 1895.
