Hi,
just a quick comment on his name... Soderlund (Söderlund) sounds very Swedish...
Have you found any online records of him?

There is only one family with the surname of Soderlund in the 1916 Canadian Census for Saskatchewan..

Name: Oscar Soderlund
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 42
Est. Birth Year: 1874
Birthplace: Sweden
Year of Immigration: 1906
Home in 1916: 20, Humboldt, Saskatchewan
Address: 34, 18, W2, Lakeside
racial_or_tribal_origin: Swede (Swedish)
Relation to Head of Household: Self
Household Members: Name Age

Augusta Soderlund 29
Lillian Soderlund 9
Charles Soderlund 8

A correction to my above comment. There is one single entry for

Name: Adolph Soderlund
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Age: 32
Est. Birth Year: 1884
Birthplace: Sweden
Year of Immigration: 1912
Home in 1916: 29, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan
Address: 16, 21, W3rd, Pittville
racial_or_tribal_origin: Swedish
Relation to Head of Household: Self

He also would not appear to be the right person.

The 1906 Canadian Census for Saskatchewan has this entry

Name: G J Sutherland
[O. J. Soderlund]
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 39
Birthplace: Sweden
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Charles
Immigration Year: 1901
Province: Saskatchewan
Sub-District Description: Townships 15, 16 in Ranges 3, 4 West of The 2nd M
Sub-District: 28
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
G J Sutherland 39
Charles Sutherland 25
J N Sutherland 5
C E Sutherland 3
Erick J Sutherland 1

The name of the wife has been corrected to Kristine.

Also not a great fit to your Johan Soderlund.

The only other entry for 1906 for Soderlund is for

O J Soderlund born about 1840.

Perhaps you could give us the name of Johan's wife.

I think the origin of Søderlund is Swedish.

Johan Marius could have emigrated under another last name and changed to Søderlund in USA which was quite common.

I have following Søderlund who were married in Norway:

- Carl Søderlund 1869 in Risør (Aust-Agder County) to Anne Anstensdatter
- August Søderlund 1869 in Oslo Dome to Inger Pedersdatter
- Carl Gustav Søderlund 1878 in Kongsberg (Buskerud County) to Elen Marie Thomasdatter
- Jacob Andreas Søderlund 1879 in Stjørdal (Nord-Trøndelag County) to Anne Gurine Torsteinsdatter Husby
- Ludvig Søderlund 1872 in Onsøy (Østfold County) to Caroline Johannesdatter

An example: If Johan Marius was born to Carl Søderlund he could have emigrated as Johan Marius Carlsen (Carls son)

Hi,
there is a Jacob Sutherland [Jacob Soderlund] in Census-1910 for Duluth, St Louis, Minnesota. He is born abt 1847, thus 32 years older than Johan Marius... a bit too old to be a brother...?
This Jacob is Norwegian, and emigrated from Trondheim on May 19th, 1904 as Jacob Andreas Fredriks. Søderlund.
Here he is in census-1900 for farm Nardo in Nedre Stjørdalen, Nord-Trøndelag.
Jacob is born in Hammerfest, Finnmark. Profession is baker.

Here he is in census-1865 for Hammerfest , Finnmark.
His parents are Skipper Petter Magnus Søderlund born abt 1822 in Sweden and Caroline Christine born abt 1828 in Trondheim.

A breakthrough?
Armoured ship "Tordenskiold", 06-Dec-1900:
Johan Marius Søderlund, male, not married, discharged able seaman, born 1876 in Kristianssund, Møre & Romsdal county, residence: Hill.
"Hill" sounds like it could be located in England...

Arrival New York on Jul 19, 1903 on The Celtic:
Sailor Johan Söderlund (27), dep Liverpool, nationality Norwegian, last residence Barrow, final dest New York

Census-1910 for Duluth, St Louis, Minnesota shows this entry:
John Soderland, born 1877, imm 1902
Does the original census contain any additional info?

Unfortunatly, the original church records for Kristiansund are in a very bad shape after a fire.
Kristiansund (or neighboring parishes) should contain his chr record from abt 1876, or his confirmation record from abt 1891, where his parents would be listed.

I'm starting to believe that Jacob Sutherland [Jacob Soderlund] b. 1847 and wife Anna born 1845 are Johan Marius' parents! Jacob's profession in 1900 was baker.

And in census-1900 for Nitedal, Akershus, we find one Casper Søderlund, born 1880.
His profession is bread-making(!), and he is born in Kristiansund(!)
I believe Casper could be a brother of Johan Marius.

Casper is the son of Jacob Andreas Soderlund & Anna Gurine Torsteinsdtr Husby. And Caspar Soderlund later emigrated to Duluth, St Louis, Minnesota!
He is married to Anna, and have atleast these children:
Arvid Soderlund, b 1906
Ingrid Soderlund, b 1907
Arthur Soderlund, b 1909
Gladys Soderlund, b 1923

Kasper Søderlund's confirmation record from Stjørdal, Nord-Trøndelag confirms that he is born in Kristiansund: # 27

Emigration from Oslo on April 24th, 1903.
Baker Kasper Jakobsen Søderlund (23) from Stjørdalen, dest Minnesota

Casper SODERLUND
Birth Date: 4 Jan 1880
Death Date: Oct 1963
Social Security Number: 470-07-5962
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Minnesota
Actual Death Residence: Minnesota

Another record from LDS.

Jacob Andreas Fredriks. Søderlund and wife must have lived in Kristiansund in the 1870s-1880s, then moved to Trondheim, and then again to Stjørdal, where they can be found in 1900.

lyndal40: Do you see if these people live in the same neighborhood in Duluth, St Louis, MN (census-1910)?

Jacob Soderlund, born 1847, imm 1903
John Soderland, born 1877, imm 1902
Caspar Soderlund, born 1880, imm 1902

I believe it's father and two sons...
