I am interested in finding relatives of my great-grandfather, Mathias Tanke Olson Imbs b. 1842 who settled in New Zealand in the early 1870's. He was a farmer and bridge contractor. It is known that at least 3 of his siblings emigrated to USA or Canada. Family was: Soren Olson b 1833, Helberg Lene Oson b. 1835, Bore Reinhert Olson b. 1837, Kirsten Marie Olson b. 1838, Olaus and Johanna Olson (twins) b. 1840, Mathias, Ole Andreas oslon b. 1844, Lauritz Berhardt Olson b. 1848.

I do not know when he came to NZ but he married my great-grandmother in 1871. Any information would be great.

Thank you for your prompt reply - I do appreciate it as I could not find the Ims farm in the 1865 census. The date I wrote for the marriage to my great-grandmother (which was in Dunedin, New Zealand) was incorrect - it should read 1881. As Mathias Olson Imbs was not at the farm in 1865 census I assume he had left before then. I am trying to discover where he went, what date and how he arrived in New Zealand.

Søren left Imbs April 20 1857 for Nordamerika (USA), see 3rd record far right. He obviously returned since he was in Ims 1865.

No trace of Mathias found so far.

Ims is west from Høle, information concerning Ims to the left and family nr 26 tells Olaus Olsen Ims b. 1840 was farming in Dakota.

Ims, probably named after ther river coming from Lake Ims, sounds wellknown, I think I have been working with this farm earlier.

This is wonderful - thank you so much to eibache and Kare - I am piecing the family together slowly - it is very exciting and interesting how the names of the families reflect the original (my great-grandfather's siblings).

Helberlene´s 4. child Olaus Mathias Andreasen age 1 on Homersand in1865, born Oct. 19. 1865, see #161
Right page tells that his uncle Olaus Olsen (em. to Dakota 1884) was one of the godparents.
As you can see in column 6 from left Helberlene Olsdtr. was shortened to Lena Olsdtr.

Emigration Stavanger;
unknown year, unknown destination;
Olaus Matthias Andreasen Hommersand, see here

I am most grateful to eibache and Kaarto for the wealth of information above - I have put it into some semblance of order. I was hoping some distant relative would contact me as well. Can anyone tell me how I can research shipping lists for the years from 1864 to 1871 from Norway to NZ, assuming my ggrandfather travelled to NZ and not to USA or Canada on the journey?
