My great-grandfather was Andreas Andersen b. 7 Oct 1835(on death certificate) (may vary) in Eidsvold, Norway. 1865 census 6062 23 living on Vestengen Krogen 1. He came to America leaving Oslo 9 June 1871 on the Hero (don't know the transatlantic vessel). His wife and family left on 11 Oct 1872 on S/S Oder (am not able to find passenger record). They settled in Jackson County, Wisconsin and he took the surname Berger because he had worked at the Berger Glass factory in Eidsvold. He had a half-brother named Anton Anderson b. around 1860 and half- sister named Maren Andersdatter b. 19 Feb 1857. I have pictures of them. Both were born in Norway and I think in Eidsvold, but I find no record of them in census, confirmation or emigration records. They both came to America. Maren settled in La Crosse County, Wisconsin and Anton maybe in Jackson County. It may be that the half-siblings come from either mother or father of Andreas.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thank you.
Mary

Diff to find because many church books from that period were lost in a fire 1877 on Eidsvoll rectory.

birth years indicate that the most likely relationship to Andreas is the same father.

Wonderful information. Thank you so much. I will take the picture of the Berger Glass Factory to our yearly Berger Reunion. Now I know my Grandpa came on the ship Minnesota. Awesome! Any suggestions as to the half-siblings will be sooooo appreciated. I just don't know where to look. They should be on some passenger list. Do you think they could have used different names? And they should be on a confirmation church record. Thanks again.

What is your source for their birthdates?

"He had a half-brother named Anton Anderson b. around 1860 and half- sister named Maren Andersdatter b. 19 Feb 1857"

Do you have any online records for Anton or Maren?

It was the company Tostrup & Mathiesen who bought the farm Berger 1852 and started a glassfactory in 1857.
The heat source was mainly waste from the saw-mill.
The production was mainly bottles and water decanters for the railway company.
The glass factory closed 1875.

I just love to hear about the Glass Factory! My sources for Anton Anderson's birth is his burial record in North Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, Trempealeau County, WI. It was said that Anton had died in an accident when working in the woods. When I found the burial record it said he was born in Norway and died when a tree fell on him Jan. 1900 and that he was 40 years old. Maren Anderson's birth date is from her granddaughter. I think Maren came after 1880 because there is no Maren or Marie Anderson in the 1880 La Crosse City Directory. But there are 3 in 1890.
Maren married John Brunner 28 Feb 1895 La Crosse County Marriage records, and she died 11 May 1900 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. By that time she had 3 small children.

1895 Wisconsin State Census: 20 June 1895, 1st Ward of City of Onalaska, La Crosse Co., Wisconsin.John Brunner is listed with one male and one female. One was born in Germany and one was born in Scandanavia. So this would be John and wife, Maren Anderson Brunner saying she was born in Scandanavia.
Because the church records from Eidsvold burned and the 1890 US Census burned, the search is more difficult, but Anton and Maren should have been in Eidsvold 1865 census and church confirmation records and emigration records, but I just don't find them and have been searching for years. I have old photos that identify them and am in touch with Maren's descendants who know nothing else about her either.

Thank you so much for those of you who searched for my Anton and Maren. I appreciate all of you. I didn't know anything about the Berger glass factory before except that my great-grandfather worked there before he came here and so took the Berger surname.

Could Anton and Maren you refer to be his children, ie not his (half-) siblings?

Emigration in 1872 shows that they have children by that name, allthough age doesnt fit 100%...
Anton Søn m 16 Eidsvold
Maren Andreass. Datter k 6 Eidsvold

Their daughter Maren Andrine Andreasdr is born 09 SEP 1866, which is far off 19 Feb 1857..., allthough 09/09 could look like 19/02 with some poor handwriting...

Isn't that odd? No, Anton b. 1856 was my grandfather and Maren (Mary) b. 1866 was his sister and I knew them both. But, on Maren Andersdatter 1857 on her marriage certificate to John Brunner 1895 in La Crosse, WI, it states that her parents are Andreas and Mary Berger, who are my greats. That seems strange, but maybe her husband filled out the certificate. Oral history always said "Uncle Anton" was Andreas 1835 half-brother. Then there is the other story that we heard that Andreas' father had been killed by a bull while walking home from church in his Sunday clothing in Norway. Wish I'd have asked more questions when I was small! It must be that there was a woman with these two children in the 1865 census somewhere.

Yes, that Anton is my grandpa. He was born in 1856 and lived to be 95 years old. Thanks for searching. I appreciate it.
