My ancestor, John Olson was born in Norway and is listed on the Swedish ship, Favoriten, which sailed from Stockholm and arrived in NY on 1 June, 1837. He was 30 yrs old and traveled with Hans Olson, age 19. Both were joiners.

Please suggest how to search for his birthplace or residence in Norway.

Many thanks!

Might be a tough one. Here for starters is the ship record.

John Olson
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: John Olson
Arrival Date: 1 Jun 1837
Birth Date: abt 1807
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Stockholm, Sweden
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Favorita

How about some information on his life in US,

I have to assume that the year you gave was accurate, 1837, which means that John Olson was born about 1807 somewhere in Norway.

Norway did a nationwide census in 1801 and it is available to search online as a database but John will not be in that census. The next nationwise census of all names in Norway was in 1865 and he will have already left the country.

So - were there any other notes about him in Swedish records before or when he boarded the ship? Have you exhausted US records which may have mentioned his birth location such as church records where he was a member, an obituary, or even checked the origin locations of the other Norwegian emigrants wherever he chose to live?

The name "John Olson" is going to be very very common so you really need to try to find some hint as to WHERE in Norway he first came from.

On this site on the 1837 voyage two Norwegian passengers are named John Olsen and Hans Olsen, both joiners. Perhaps they are related:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=2129

You will do yourself a service by aggressively collecting information on John Olsen over here. Records here often contain information about their origins in Norway.

Norwegian Immigrants to the United States: A Biographical Directory 1825-1850, Volume 1 1825-1843 page 33 by Gerhard Naeseth identifies John Olsen as Johannes Olsen confirmed in 1822 son of Ole Ditlevson and Anne Christin Matthin. John and Hans were leaving through Kristiansand.

Here is a possible Ole Ditlevson in Kristiansand in 1801:
