The Collision between the S/S Empress of Ireland and the S/S Storstad

This article was provided by Marion Kelch, chairperson of the Empress of Ireland Artifacts Committee. The Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence River the night of May 29, 1914, after colliding with the Norwegian collier S/S Storstad. The accident took 1012 lives of which 14 were Norwegians. The Empress of Ireland is the world's second worst sinking, in peacetime, after the Titanic until 1987 when over 3000 persons lost their lives when a ferry sank in the Philippines.

BURNING OF THE STEAMSHIP CITY OF MONTREAL ON THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IN 1887

The ship caught fire at sea. She was carrying a cargo of 8,000 bales of raw American cotton, and was the 73rd ship with such cargo to catch fire in only 5 months. The passengers and crew were rescued by the S/S York City of the Furness Line. This is a transcript of an article in the London Illustrated News, August 27, 1887.

The voyage of the Sirius - 1866

These accounts from the voyage of the Sirius from Bergen to Quenbec in 1866, are reprinted with the kind permission of the Valdres Samband. They were first published in "Budstikken", December 1980, and "Budstikken" December 1981. There were were references to the voyage in the "Valdres Samband 1899-1974", drawn from an earlier record in 1914 in the magazine "Samband". The accounts were made available by Mrs. Harold J. Thompson of Brainerd, Minnesota. The second mate, Axel Smith's account was provided by the Norwegian Shipping museum in Oslo (Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum)

In 1902 several thousand people were witnesses to the departure of one of the most spectacular crowds of emigrants ever to have left the port of Kristiania. This happened when almost 500 young Norwegians boarded the S/S Manchester Shipper at Vippetangen for a free passage to Canada.

This is an account of the collision between the S/S Europa and brig Charles Bartlett in 1849. The previous year the Cunard steamship Europa had set a new transatlantic record when crossing from Liverpool to New York in 11 days and 3 hours. At the time of the collision she was going at the rate of twelve knots, striking the Charles Bartlett abreast of the after main shrouds.
