In 1842 the bark Ellida departed from Drammen and Goteborg in June, and arrived at New York on August 8th. She was carrying 176 passengers. 70 of them came from Telemark and 77 from Numedal. When the ship arrived on August 8th, the passengers were in a miserable condition. Eight of them had died during the crossing, and thirty were so badly taken by sickness that they had to be brought to hospital, more dead than alive. One of them died the same day at the hospital. The doctor expected that several of the other hospitalized Norwegians would not make it either. 3 of the passengers that had died on board were infants that had been born on the voyage. The decease was probably a mixture of cholera and typhoid fever. She was mastered by capt. Jens J. Jensen from Flekkefjord.
