The brig Frihandel was owned by a company in Grimstad. Her burden was 120½ Commercial lasts. Her flag id. was: O57. According to Adolph Ingemann's "Den norske handelsflaade" 1850. In 1854 the Frihandel departed from Grimstad for Stockholm, and from there to New York. On the way from Stockholm to new York, the ship was wrecked. The passengers where rescued by the American ship "St. George" and arrived to New York on December 10th.

Newspaper notice based on a report from the Norwegian consul in New York: Brig Frihandel of Grimstad on voyage from Stockholm to New York with a load of iron and 17 passengers was abandoned and lost. The ship had been abandoned on the 3rd of December in sinking condition. Passengers and crew rescued by the American packet St. George, Capt Crawford and arrived at New York on December 10th. |
