Norwegian Commercial lasts. In 1868 the ship Johan departed from Namsos May 12th, and arrived at Quebec July 14th, carrying 423 passengers. In 1869 the ship Johan of Skien departed from Christiania Apr. 20th, and arrived at Quebec June 20th. She was sailing in ballast, and was carrying 360 steerage passengers and 4 cabin passengers. There was an outbreak of measles and varioloid (variola = smallpox) When the ship arrived to the quarantine station at Grosse Î, ten were sick. There had been three births on the voyage. On May 24th, the child of Marthe Haagensen, age 22 was born, on June 7th the daughter of Pernille Halvorsen age 24, and on May 22nd the daughter of Ingeborg Evensen (38) and Mathias Olsen (37) was born. There were also three deaths, the first death occurred on April 26th when Ole age 1, the son of Andreas Jacobsen died. Then on May 14th, Mathia Pedersen age 1, son of Peder Torgersen age 27 and Biata Larsen age 38, died. The third and last death was on April 24th, when old Johannes Pedersen of 76, the husband of Siri Andersen (75) perished away. The Johan was mastered by Capt. H. Thorsen, and had a crew of 18. Her tonnage was given to be 659.62 tons.
