The Brig Norden left Stavanger May 25th, 1836 with 110 passengers and
a crew of 12. She arrived at New York August 13th. The "Norden" was the second emigrant ship from Norway to reach America, after the legendary sloop "Restaurationen," which made the voyage eleven years before. The bright colors displayed as the immigrants landed in their best clothes made quite some impression at the harbor. The ship was owned by I. A. Køhler & Co in Stavanger, and had a burden of 114 Norwegian Commercial lasts. She was mastered by Capt. Tønnes Willemsen. The Journey is said to have been cold and wet with stormy weather. The passengers suffered from severe colds and illnesses. They did not have sufficient clothing or shoes. The Captain complained that the passengers had not followed his advice of bringing warm clothes and wooden shoes. Five of the passengers died during the Atlantic crossing, and one child was born.
