The Olaf was built in 1848 as the "Patten" at Patten & Studerant in Richmond, Maine - USA. Her burden was 319 Norwegian Commercial lasts. Her details was 135,5 feet long x beam 30,9 feet and depth 20,8 feet. Owner between 1861 and 1884 was Ole Olsen in Tønsberg. Olaf sailed from Christiania to Quebec with emigrants in 1866, 1867, 1868 and 1869, mastered by C. Andersen. The agent was Blichfeldt, Knoph & Co in Christiania. In 1866 the Olaf departed from Christiania Apr. 22nd, and arrived at Quebec June 9th. She was sailing in ballast, and was carrying 387 steerage passengers and 4 cabin passengers. An infant died of debility on the voyage. There were two births. She was mastered by Capt. Andersen and had a crew of 17. In 1867 the Olaf departed from Christiania Apr. 15th , and arrived at Quebec May 29th. Master was Capt. Andersen. In 1868 she departed from Christiania Apr. 23rd, and arrived at Quebec June 27th. In 1869 the Olaf departed from Christiania Apr. 23rd, and arrived at Quebec June 23rd. She was sailing in ballast, and was carrying 153 steerage passengers and two cabin passengers. There was an outbreak of Varioloid (smallpox) on the ship, and when she arrived at the quarantine station on Grosse Île, three of the passengers were sick and one of them died. A child was born on the voyage and died after 8 days. The Olaf was mastered by Capt. Andersen, and had a crew of 17.

Newspaper announcement from "Hamar Stiftstidende" Nov. 27, 1866: "Ship Olaf, 319 Commercial lasts, mastered by Capt. Andersen, will leave for Quebec with emigrants. The ship has a spacey tween-deck, [the hull] is copper hooded and a fast sailor. The fare is 15 Spd. for adults and children between 1 - 14 years the half. Infants under 1 year goes free. Landing money is 1 Spd each for adults and paying children. Those who has not got supplies can buy that here in town, when enrolling, for the cost of 9 Spd. 31 Sh. for adults. The ship provides water, wood, light, medical care and guidance to Chicago. When enrolling a prepayment of 5 Spd. is required for adults, and the half for children. Enrolling at Arne Pedersen in Upper Mosstu in Stange, where further information can be obtained. - Upper Mosstu November 21. 1866.
