The Protector (ex Mazeppa) was built in 1858. It was bought by Norwegian owners from the United States. Her tonnage was 898 tons net, 450 Norwegian Commercial lasts. Owner was J. A. Køhler & Co. and later Plough & Sundt in Stavanger. Master 1864 - 67 was G. Torstensen, 67 - 68 T. Olsen, from 1868 Haakon Madsen. In 1867 the ship Protector departed from Stavanger May 27th, and arrived at Quebec July 5th. She was carrying 268 passengers. She was mastered by Capt. T. Olsen. 845 tons. In 1868 she departed from Stavanger May 19th, and arrived at Quebec June 28th. She was carrying 33 passengers. Mastered by Capt. H. Madsen. In 1870 the ship Protector departed from Stavanger Apr. 29th, and arrived at Quebec June 20th. She was sailing in ballast, and was carrying 405 steerage passengers and 13 cabin passengers. There were four births on the voyage, and three children died of diarrhoea and debility. On this voyage the ship was mastered by Capt. H. Falck, and had a crew of 22.
