Thank you Norway!

o.k. we are defianantly on a Norwegian film kick. We saw another very good film last night by the same director, Erik Poppe. The name of the film was "Troubled Water" I don't know the name in Norwegian. Very well acted and very good story line.

If these films are any indication of the quality of films Norway is putting out then I am impressed.

Interesting!
Those two movies are actually on the Top 10 list from different reviews/magazines etc, for the 10 Best Norwegian Movies from the last decade (2000-2009):

1. Kitchen Stories
Salmer fra kjøkkenet (2003)

2. Reprise (2006)

3. The Bothersome Man
Den brysomme mannen (2006)

4. Kissed by Winter
Vinterkyss (2005)

5. Troubled Water
De Usynlige (2008)

6. Upperdog (2009)

7. Cool and Crazy
Heftig og Begeistret (2001)

8. Hawaii, Oslo (2004)

9. Free Jimmy
Slipp Jimmy fri (2006)

10. Sons
Sønner (2006)

Another movie which have received great reviews since it came out is "Max Manus" (2008), a true story about one of the most famous Norwegian saboteurs during World War II.

Hello fellow listers,
I see on the list of recommended movies the film "Max Manus" -- I ordered this film through Amazon in May and was not disappointed!

The great cinematography was subtle and so important to the film that you do not realize how much it affects the viewer until after the film is done. The acting by the supporting cast, particularly by Ken Dukin as the morally corrupt Fehmer are outstanding. My only criticism is that it could have been a bit edgier in parts but overall I found it an excellent movie.

The real star is Aksel Hennie, who "becomes" Max before our eyes, his nuanced expressions changing from a young man whose altruistically inspired and idealistic service for his country changes bit by bit until at the end we see his haunted face expressing all his incalculable loss and the memories he must deal with for the rest of his life. How do people go back to being normal after war? The answer is that they don't, although they try.

I give this film a very strong recommendation and hope that other members of the forum can see it.

(Erik: I am taking your suggestion of Hawaii, Oslo and putting it next on my list!)

Hi, thanks for the tip. We will rent it also!

FYI, we just saw last evening the "The Troublesome Man". This movie was incredibly interesting. It was a very somber, depressing movie and there were some points in the movie where I was literally at the edge of my seat.

I.E. the part where they are drilling through the wall for me was very intense. I kept asking my wife, "what is on the other side, I wonder?"

This is movie you need to watch and let it percolate a couple of days in your mind until you reach a conclusion what it was all about. It is a very intellectual film, in my opinion.

These poor people in the film could be in purgatory, heaven or even hell.......it's hard to say.

It's incredible the quality of films Norway is putting out.

I completely agree that Norway is putting out high quality films these days. I think that the fact that they are not as well known around the world as US films is that people seem to gravitate towards what my son describes as McMovies: you rapidly consume them and then do not think much about them afterwards. And Hollywood has done a great job of convincing us that that is what we should be watching. So, I look forward to The Troublesome Man and other Norwegian films!

Erik; while you are on this "Norwegian film kick"; another movie worth mentioned would be Elling.

The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002, but didn't receive the Oscar.
Its a feel good movie and follows the lives of two friends Elling and Kjell Bjarne as they try to adjust to a normal life after having spent two years together in a mental institution as roomies.

Quotes from the movie:
Elling is about to order two train tickets to Oslo.
Train ticket salesman: Yes?
Elling: Yes!
Train ticket salesman: You're going to?
Elling: Yes, we! Kjell Bjarne and I are going to Oslo of course.
Train ticket salesman: One way?
Elling: There are more ways?
Train ticket salesman: That'll be 130 kroner per ticket.
Elling: 130 kroner? The last time mother and I took the train to Larvik the ticket cost 25.
Train ticket salesman: That must have been about 30 years ago.
Elling: Yes

Yes, it's a warm-hearted funny movie.
The story will be put up on Broadway (New York) this Autumn, with Denis O'Hara and Brendan Fraser in leading roles. The book which the movie was based on, is written by Ingvar Ambjørnsen, a well-known Norwegian writer.

Hi J.P.

We saw Elling and loved it! Thanks for the recommendation. We can totally see this as a broadway play and Brendan Fraser would not doubt be Kjell Bjarne! What a riot!

I really liked the actor in the movie who played the old poet, intelligencia guy (Per Christiansen).

I think the movie was better understood by NOrwegians, however, as I sensed there was alot of cultural inside jokes.....but I believe the movie was a possible satire against the all encompassing, all helpful Norwegian Labor governement? It showed that people could help themselves without constant assistance? Or am I reading too much into the movie?

At any rate, it was entertaining, without looking too deeply into it.

thanks again!!

Here is an idea and was wondering if anybody else might have an interest.

What about picking a movie, watching it and then meeting some time to discuss it on line?

A film club or maybe a book club? , maybe a Knut Hamsun novel or perhaps a contemporary Norwegian author you could introduce to us?

I don't think it will harm the forum, but we should probably create a new forum category for this. It might be labeled "Contemporary Norwegian Culture" or something like that. And recipes! Another great idea. We Norwegians here in the 'new' country are eating like Norwegians in the 1800's. We are stuck in time and have not advanced. My Grandma always used to say ishta and our daughter says uffda even today going to college!

If you are giving this idea serious thought, could you add a book discussion section? There are a lot of great books worthy of discussion and promotion; last year I suggested what I feel is an outstanding book, "Out Stealing Horses" by Per Pettersen, to a book discussion group in Wisconsin. They loved it! I have read quite a few books by Norwegian authors both past and present and hope that a book discussion area can perhaps inspire others to read the wealth of good books that Norway provides.

Two teaser reviews that may have other people looking for the Pettersen book:

This is interesting Wanda.

It´s the firts boat grave found in Scotland. The Vikings used boats as coffins.
It was Norse settlements on the east coast of Scotland, this tomb is on a peninsula on the west-coast.
In 794 AC on Lona, an island just off the same peninsula, it´s mentioned in written sources of the first Viking attack in Scotland.
The man in the tomb was probably a chief or a highly respected warrior since the sword has engravings.
One of many questions is whether he lived in Scotland and if the boat is of the same type as those that were build in Norway.
A curiosity; In an old Icelandic source it was warned not to visit Scotland because of the many wild tribes and the terrible weather.
Olav Trygvason, before he was king of Norway, was on an expedition to Scotland ab. 995.

Hei.
No, i have not seen that video, thanks for sharing.
I read the news on yesterday.

Among all objects in the tomb was an Irish pin in bronze.

Reg. Olav Trygvasson, it was just a thought that striked an amateur.
Olav Trygvasson and his fleet was at the British Isles from 991-95 where he demanded money for "protection"
991 Olav was at Blackwater River at Maldon in Essex where Earl Brithnoth rejected an offer from the vikings to pay in gold and silver in return for piece and to avoid fighting.
Brithnoth and all his men fall in the Battle.

Later same year Olav sailed to London, with him was a Norwegian Viking chief from Ireland, Gudmund, Stegita son, perhaps "Skjegge´s son " where King Ethelred´s dealers accepted to pay 20 000 Pund in gold and silver for protection against other fleets and allow commercial ships come to and from London, the document "Peace agreement" is in Anglo Saxon/Lathin translated to Norwegian, Link

Ab. 995 Olav and his fleet traveled to Scotland.
Since there, so fare, is no Viking settlement discovered on the west-coast of Scotland I was thinking of Olav Trygvasson.
If there is a microscopic chance it was one of his men that was buried in the boat grave?

It will be exiting to follow the dating of the tomb.

The Norwegian TV series "Lilyhammer" is soon to be aired on Netflix.
The series is about Frank Tagliano, who had to go undercover in the Olympic city of Lillehammer, Norway, after testifying against the New Jersey-based Italian-American mobster family in US court.
The Sopranos-star Steven van Zandt (Little Steven) has the lead role in this TV-series, which is a Norwegian "follow-up" of the American television drama "The Sopranos".

Thanks, Jan Peter! I was just in Norway last week and had a wonderful time. I was in Vegusdal, Mykland, Seljord, Hjartdal, Vikersund, Lillehammer, Gausdal and Oslo. For those with family from the Gausdal valley, I think it is the most beautiful place I've ever seen. It must of been very hard for them to leave such beauty. I came home looking for more movies to watch. My brother recently recommended "Kitchen Stories" from 2003. He said that I would like it, so I'm passing this on, as well. Storyline
In post war Sweden it was discovered that every year, an average housewife walks the equivalent number of miles as the distance between Stockholm and Congo, while preparing her family meals. So the Home Research Institute sent out eighteen observers to a rural district of Norway to map out the kitchen routines of single men. The researchers were on twenty-four-hour call, and sat in special strategically placed chairs in each kitchen. Furthermore, under no circumstances were the researchers to be spoken to, or included in the kitchen activities.

Noone knows what happened to the Norse settlements on Greenland after the 1300s
Baffin Island was called Helluland "Flat slab land" in the Saga.
Perhaps it´s possible to find out where the whetstones came from.

Whetstones from Eidsborg in Tokke, Telemark, has been exported to Scandinavia and the rest of Europe since the 700s.

Hei
It was a good movie, exiting and dif. from the 1947 edition.
This time the dangerous, scary situations were shot in secure facilities unlike in 1947 live production where the camera had to be put aside when it was about survival.

My uncle wanted him to fix it, but my Dad enjoyed seeing how it bothered him, so he just left it the way I had stacked it. :-)

The History Channel is running a series called "Vikings" which aired (the first program I think) last Sunday night. I really enjoyed it, costuming great, (no horned helmets, Yay) ice blue eyes, etc. etc. It's not a Norwegian film per se but a series about Norwegians or Scandinavians from the Viking age, perfecting their craft, on their way to becoming global traders. Hope the goodness continues.

Hello Dear Friends.

My wife and I have been watching the vikings on hulu.com. the first season had 9 episodes. It is somewhat interesting but I wish they would focus much more on the cultural aspects. There is too much violence but perhaps this is accurate. I was surprised to learn that the Vikings sacrificed humans at Uppsula, Sweden......that was very surprising.

All in all, though, I find the show entertaining.

Best to all!

Erik, I think we do have to remember, that this was a pagan religion. They gave offerings, so that their crops would come in, their raids would be plentiful, etc.... Just a very different way of thinking, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the Priest starts to bring Christianity to the Vikings. I think, he will start with Ragnar's wife.

If they follow the Sagas, it will get quite interesting for Ragnar.

The director Morten Tyldum got a name in Hollywood after the Headhunters, and his Hollywood-debut is coming up in a few weeks; called «The Imitation Game». Its about how the scientist Alan Turing broke the German codemachine Enigma during WW2. The expectations for the movie are huge, and reviews coming out says that Tyldum could get an Oscar for this one... Release in the USA is November 21st.

Occupied is the biggest TV production in Norway ever, and is based on an idea of one of the biggest Norwegian authors today; Jo Nesbo. Normally, Norwegian TV-production doesn't make fame abroad, but this production has been sold to a number of European countries.

The biggest reaction to the series came possibly from the Russian Ambassador to Norway, who said this about the TV-series:
"It is certainly a shame that this year, the 70th anniversary of victory in World War II, the authors have apparently forgotten the Soviet Army heroic struggle of the liberation of Northern Norway by Nazi occupiers and have decided, in the worst Cold War tradition, for scaring Norwegian spectators with a non-existent threat from the east."

In memory of Sondre Norheim, pioneer and champion of modern skiing. He developed slalom and introduced the Telemark and Christiana Turns.
In 1987, a statue of Norheim, built by Knut and Tove Skinnarland, was unveiled in Minot. Norheim was also honored at opening ceremonies for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
Perhaps one of the most fitting honors occurred in 1986 at the World Skiing Championship in Holmenkollen, Norway. In that competition, a young skier by the name of Pam Norheim competed in the biathalon. She is a great-granddaughter of Sondre Norheim, the father of modern skiing.

A new norwegian TV-series called Vikingane ("The Vikings") premiered last week on Norwegian TV.
The series is a humorous drama set in the Viking Age, and deal with everyday issues such as gender roles change, power struggles, family strife and love trouble. The challenges resemble those we face today, but with completely different rules and far more dramatic consequences in the year 790...

During the making, all scenes were shot twice. One norwegian version and one english version in "norwenglish"; english with a heavy norwegian accent/pronunciation.
Talks are currently ongoing to sell the series to the American market, like Netflix or HBO.
