I have been looking in the Norwegian records for birth, confirmation and emigration information on James N. Sandvigen, born 1866 in Norway, and died 1945 in Seattle, WA.
I don't know what the N. stands for. I have found his naturalization record in America, but nothing that matches up in Norway. I have been looking for Jens born 1866, but nothing has really matched up. Any suggestions for finding him in Norway?

Info in the naturalization record would be of interest to know.
Sandvigen could be a farmname, found in Rogaland and Vest Agder. As a rural name it exists several places.

James was not common in Norway, but in 1865 there were 70 James in Norway.
A shot in the dark if he kept the initials.

"Sandvigen, J.N. udv. fra Aadalen 1887, hotelforettning i Seattle, Wash. siden 1892."
Sandvigen, J.N. migrated from Aadalen in 1887, hotel work or proprietor in Seattle, Washington, since 1892.

Thank you JK Marler. I am so happy to have found him. Now I am looking for his wife (they married in 1892 in Seattle). She was Anne Moi (Moe), birth 1870 in Norway, died 1931 Seattle. The 1920 census says she immigrated in 1890, and the 1930 census says 1888, which is when he immigrated. A family tree on ancestry says that she was born 11/29/1870 in Tjomeland, Lyngdal, Moi, Norway near Moi, Norway Lutheran Church. I found a Moi in Rogaland but I didn't find a birth that matched the description in 1870. There is also Lyngdal in Vest-Augder. Her obituary gave her name as Anne Moe Sandvigen. Another mystery! I found an Anna Moe (looks like Moi on the original list) with an arrival date of 3 Aug 1888, but it gives her birth date as "about 1866" which would be 4 years off. That was on the ship Geiser.

"Ann S Fraas" born 1871 arrived New York on the "City of Chicago", June 15th, 1889. Maybe "S Fraas" is mixed up with her hometown, "Kvaas S.", ie. Kvaas Sogn (parish)?

That is 100% correct.
It was a legal right on the farm on free supplies for the rest of a "Kaarmand" (he) og "Kaarkone´s " (she) life even if the farm was sold.

Ole Fredriksen Ringerud, married to Maria Christiansdatter, was the oldest brother of my g. g. grandfather Elling Fredriksen Ringerud, don't have his exact birthdate. He first married Berit Pedersdatter who drowned in the Grythe River in 1837. He secondly married my g. g. grandmother, widow Ingrid Ostensedatter, on 20 March 1842. She was born in 1808, confirmed at Viker, previously married to soldier Asle Clemmetsen and had Christian and Gunhild. With Elling Fredriksen she had two daughters, Berit, born 1842, and Anne, born 1845. Elling died in 1861 and Ingrid and her two daughters emigrated to America. Anne married my Elling Pedersen Enger of Eggedal in Wisconsin, 1865. That's how I got here!

According to my records the Ole Fredriksen married to Maria Christiansdatter was age 29 in 1801 and was baptized 14 June 1772. (See Digitalarkivet 1801 census for 0613 Norderhaug living on Ringerud). His father, Fredrik Olsen Ringerud was baptized 27 January 1743. His father Ole Fredriksen was baptized 15 Jan 1716 and buried 29 June 1755. My g. g. grandfather Elling Fredriksen was age 12 in 1801 which would have made his birth in 1789. His older brother Ole Fredriksen was the farmer. Fredrik Olsen Ringerud died in 1799 so Ole had taken over the farm by 1801.

Last of the godparents was Mari Thorsdatter, probably Fredriks (Frichs) mother.
Putting the right age in a census, the question was; How old are on your next birthday.

Still missing when his mother Gunnild Thorsdatter Sandvigen died.
That could be the main reason for his emigration in 1887.

Grythe was a subfarm under Ringerud, separated 1838. Owner was Ole Fredriksen Ringerud.
His son Fredrik (Frek) takes over Grythe 1839. When Fredrik died 1884 his wife Gunnild Olsdatter owned the farm in ca 3-4 years before she split Grythe in two equal parts, daughter Gunhild got the southern part and the son Christian got the northern part.
Bjørnerud owned by a son Fredrik Fredriksen and Tonette Thorsdatter Sandvigen in 1900 was first a sub farm under Grythe.

Thank you! This summer we had a nice visit with the wife of Ole Olsen Ringerud. Inger Lise Grimsrud. He was on the mountain and she was taking care of 7500 hens. They sell eggs all over the area. They are now the 11th generation of the same family on Ringerud, and the 12th, their son Ole Olsen Ringerud, will take it over next. She brought out her family papers, and also showed us the rock where the Dog King Ring was tied! It is such a beautiful farm, right on the banks of Lake Sperillen.

Sæterbakken is listed as 421.2 (Sæterbakken Østre #421.2 in the new Brottum book). Ole Engebretsen Sæterbakken was born 1795, the son of Engebret Amundsen Moenbakken (1754-1821), bygsler, lagrettesmann, tømmersmann and Anne Syversdatter (1770-1833).
My g. g. grandmother was their daughter Anne, born 1832, married Christian Larsen Gjeitrud, born 1835, and they emigrated to America in 1871.
I have been looking for Ole Engebretsen's birth in Ringsaker Parish because the 1801 census shows them in Ringsaker on the farm Sætherbachen. He married first Berthe Evendtr. Berg and second Marthe Nielsdatter. He had an Anne with each wife, but the first one died at age 6. I looked through the birth records for 1795 several times but never found his birth. Those old records are very difficult to read, especially when you don't read Norwegian well.

Thank you! There it is. I looked before and I saw several Embrets but I did not know that was the same as Engebret. I guess I should change the title of this topic to Hedmarken! Now from reading further in the bygdebok I have found that the Marthe Nielsdatter (1802-1886), Ole's mother, was from the farm Avskakalia midtre, so that is another farm to see! Her parents were Niels Nielsen Avskakelien, gardbruker og soldat. It says Niels was married in 1794 to Kari Mortensdatter Hovemoen, 1770-1855, sister of Lars Mortensen of Avskakalia Nordre. Niels Nielsen's father was Niels Jensen Kloven/Ore/Avskakelien, soldat from Kloven. This is exciting! I bought these books this summer and am just getting into them. I am sure I will have many more questions.

Diff. to translate these old Norwegian words.
A brief summary after my best ability if the translater is cooperating
Matrikkelnr.on Sæterbakken acc. to the 1400s-1838 "matrikkel" was 375
Matrikkelnr on Sæterbakken acc. to the 1838-1886 "matrikkel" was 72
"Gårdsmatrikkel" 1838 for Sæterbakken, Brøttum.
"Matrikkelskyld" or "skyld" was a system to calculate the tax on the farm after a fixed percentage of the annual return on the farm, here estimated to one Daler an four Ort, ca 1.8 Daler.
What is interesting is that Sæterbakken had two owners in 1838, Ole Engebrektsen and Ole Johnsen, link
Within 1865 Ole Engebrektsen and Marte Nilsdatter had sold Sæterbakken and recieved now as former owners "Føderaad" secured by a legal right on free supplies on the farm as long as they lived.

Hi, you are right.
Very old words, do not exist today, that´s why a modern dictionary can´t translate it.
"Tilgangslister" is another word for "Innflyttede", moving into a parish, incoming people.
More common is "innflyttede" incoming
The opposite is "Avgangslister", leaving a parish
More common is "utvandrede" leaving the parish, emigration.

Nils Nilsen died 1810 within 1809, probate register, not online, tells the net fortune was 160 Daler, 3 children alive, Ole, Kari and your Marthe.

These farms was very small, up to "10 mål" 2,5 acres, perhaps just enough to feed a cow, some pigs, goats and cheeps and had other work in addition.
47. 1a means it was farm nr 47.1 who gave land to this farm.
These farms are probably only used for vaccation today.

It is amazing how they could survive on a farm that small, especially with the large families most people had back then. It really explains why so many decided to emigrate to a place where they could get 160 acres from the government. However a lot of the immigrants had a very hard life here also. The first time I went to Norway I was so overwhelmed by the beauty everywhere that I couldn't understand why anyone would ever leave there. I still feel like that each time I go, but I can understand why they left.

In 1865 S. Avskåkålien was on total 280 acres including pastureland, 7 acres was of good soil and the farm could feed 12 persons, 2 horses, 7 big cattle, 10 cheeps and a pig, so 1/2 barrel of barley, 2 2/3 of mixed korn and 3 barrels of potatoes (8-10 in return?) fishing, hunting and handicraft in addition.
This was a good farm to grew up on.
One reason for the large em. to America (50% of the population) was the vaccination project started ca 1790 and within 2 generations the population doubled but the number of farms did not increase in the same number, it bacame crowdy, many starved, espesially the cottagers and leasholders.
The reason I changed the year Nils Nilsen died from 1810 (1810 was the probate register) to before 1809 is becaus the widow Kari Mortensdatter married Gunner Halvorsen Avelsgaarden on July 14. 1809, angaged Mai 11.

The house, which evolved from an original "soddie" was moved there from Garretson, SD. The Berdahl's son James and Ole Rolvaaag were both students at Augustana Academy at one time. The writing cabin was moved there from northern Minnesota in 2001 to what they call the Augustana Heritage Park. "Giants in the Earth" was written there in September and October 1923.
