My 2nd gr grandmother was Sarah(Siri) Thorson, b Feb 10, 1842 in Fjelberg, Rogaland. She died Feb 18, 1933 in Illinois(?). They had a daughter named Thine(Tena) Boyd (Oct 10,1868-July 15,1963) born in Etna(?). I'm trying to find any information regarding their immigration and her husband Joe Boyd(1838-1902), probably English or Irish. Thanks

The US federal census entries for Sarah Boyd in Illinois give you information about WHEN Sarah immigrated to the US, when she married and where Joe Boyd was from. You can search in the US census enumerations for free at FamilySearch.org

Those censuses will also give you the name of her father.

Fjelberg was in Hordaland, Norway in the 1840s. I do not see any birth/baptism record for a Siri Olsdatter or Thorsdatter 1841-1843 in Fjelberg.

---------------------------------
I think your 'Thorson' family actually came from Skånevik, Hordaland. A district found to the east of Fjelberg.

Robert - If you check the US censuses and the FindAGrave information for the persons named Boyd in the county of Illinois where you find your 'Thorson' family - you will learn that there were Norwegian born Boyds and that included "Joe Boyd". FindAGrave information for other early year born Norwegian Boyds there reveal a strong connection to Skånevik, Hordaland.
So you research for these two families is much reduced in scope to one clerical district of Hordaland, Norway. Good luck!

The Boyd name origins from the Bauge farm in Holmedal, Skånevik, Hordaland, Norway.

For instance this civil war veteran; John B. Boyd. He was born in Bergen stift, Norway, on March 9, 184i7. Two years after his birth the family emigrated to America and settled in Kendall County some short distance from Chicago. Here the family went into farming. John was raised on the goodsoil of Illinois. At the age of sixteen and of the wishes of his parents, John with several others enlisted in the military service during the Civil War. He enlisted on January 2, 1864, and was assigned to Co. G., 64th Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out on July 11, 1S65

John B. Boyd can be found on the brig Harmoni as "Johannes Bjørnsen (2)", departing Stavanger on May 13th, 1849:
Bjørn Jonassen Johanessen 37 m Steerage
Ingeborg Pedersdatter 26 f Steerage
Johannes Bjørnsen 2 m Steerage
Peder Bjørnsen* 3 mo m Steerage
Guri Bjørnsdatter* 4 f Steerage

#24 Johannes Bjørnesen Tegland
Born 09 Mar 1847, Skånevik, Hordaland
Parents: Bjørne Johanessen & Ingeborg Pedersdatter Tegland

Joe A Boyd might not be related to John B. Boyd, but their origin must be Berge farm in Skånevik. Find-a-grave says Joseph was born 30 JUL 1838, while census-1900 says MAR 1845....

This looks like the Joseph A Boyd family in the 1880 with some children born in Norway?

1880

The members of the household other thant John and Sarah are called boarders.

Census data would indicate that two children were born in Norway, A Dina in this census and a Mikael in a different record. These two use the name Nelson in most records.

Dina Nelson also uses the name Christine Boyd in a marriage record

The OP seems to refer to Dina as this person :"They had a daughter named Thine(Tena) Boyd (Oct 10,1868-July 15,1963) born in Etna(?)." But it seems unlikely that this would be a child of Joseph and Sarah.

Also there is a Sivert Boyd in this census.

And a Lars J Boyd

John Askautson Yttre Bauge
Born 30 Jul 1838
Parents: Askaut Johnson Bauge & Gunla Abrahamsdr, Yttre Bauge

Emigration in 1857: #68 John Askautson Yttre Bauge (18 ¼)
His brother Abraham Askautson Bauge, born 19 Jan 1842, emigrated to America in 1861.

Above it was found that Joseph Boyd visited his homeland of Norway in 1900. I'm sure he (among others) met with his sister Mari Askutsdatter at the Tveit farm.

Syvert Johan Olsen Ytre Bauge above is a half-brother (same mother). Askaut died in 1847, and Gunla/Gunnele remarried with Ole Larsen Alsåker,

Ref the houseold of Joseph A Boyd in Pilot, Kankakee, Illinois:
Sivert O Boyd (15) >> Syvert Johan Olsen Ytre Bauge. Half-brother of Joseph A Boyd
Lars J Boyd (45) >> Likely Joseph's uncle Lars Johnson Bauge born 1829, to America 1858. Lars was a brother to Askaut Johnson Bauge.

so the great Joe A Boyd mystery is solved! Still seems to be some confusion regarding their daughter Tena (Thine?) Boyd. Her death notice in the Herscher paper said she was born in Etna, Norway on Oct 10, 1868 and came to Illinois at age 1yr with her parents Joe and Sarah(Thorson) Boyd. She had 7 children: Louise, Mabel, Iborra, Myrtle, Thorval, Joe, and my grandmother Anna. Could the Etna reference actually be referring to Etne which would fit with the Baúge Skånevik? Does Yttre translate to "outer"? Are Sarah and Siri interchangeable names? Why did Ole Thorsen Flatland have "vagrant" after his name? Thanks again for all your wonderful help. Robert

The search for Tena (Thine?) Boyd is still ongoing. Etna could very well be Etne, next to Skånevik, but no good candidate have been found yet.
Yttre translate to "outer". It is used to separate the two Bauge farms. The other is named Indre Bauge, "inner". Outer, as in nearest to the sea.
Sarah would be the americanized/anglified version of Siri.
The priest added the word "løsgjenger" (vagrant in english)to Ole Thorsen Flatland's name in the marriage record.
It probably means he was a vagabond without a permanent residence, travelling around in the districts, looking for work. Often to the hassle of the locals.

Niels Mikkelsen Fjelberg and Agathe Abelsdatter is interesting. They have a daughter Guro Nilsdatter, born 09 Oct 1870, christened at home 10 Oct 1870.

Could she be Thine (Tena) Boyd, born 10 Oct 10 1868, and the same as Dina or Trina Nelson b 1870?

I'm starting to believe Thine Boyd could be adopted. She seems to be born in Norway, with a father named Nils (Ref "Dina Nilson"). Both John A Boyd and Sarah Boyd were in America in the 1860''s, and it's unlikely the travelled to Norway in that period.

A summary of the various US Census records might help at this time.

In 1870 Joseph Boyd was living with or next to Thor Thorson and his wife Caroline Thorson. Sarah (Siri) age 4 and her parents and siblings left Norway in 1848 so it is difficult to believe that Trine? is their child if she was born in Norway.

1870

In the 1880 census Joseph Boyd and Sarah are married. Living with them are a whole host of characters.
Sivert O Boyd
Lars J Boyd
Hocke Nelson

In the 1900 Census Joseph A Boyd and Sarah have living with them
Ole Thorsen, probably the father of Sarah
Haskey Boyd probably Hoske Nelson fro 1880
Ida Nelson maybe the sister of Dina and Hoske
Thor Fritz probably the son of Lars J Fritz (Boyd) in 1880

1900

By the 1910 Census Joseph A Boyd is deceased and Sarah is living with her American born brother Albert and his large family. At the bottom of the list is Mikel Nelson
Miklel Nelson is one of the twins. Mikael and Elias Nielsen born in 1868 to Niels Mikkelsen and Agathe Abelsdatter

1910

In 1920 Sarah has her two nephews (one the son of brother Albert) named Henry and the other Allie unknown living with her

A couple named Niels Mikkelsen & Aagaathe Abelsdatter, Sæbø, christened a son on Oct 30th, 1870, in Fjelberg parish. Fjelberg is in Etne.(!).
Simon Abraham is born 09 Oct 1870, the same day as the Guro Nilsdatter in question above.
Could they be twins? Weird that they would be christened in different churches. But on second look, the mother to Guro is written Margrethe Abelsdatter. Maybe Guro is a wrong lead...

Simon Abraham married in Roland, Story, Iowa in 1898.

Another weird thing... born 1833? And so many children...

The farmhistory book for Eid and Fjelberg says that Nils Mikkelsen lived on nedre Sæbø in Fjelberg. He was born 1853 by parents Mikkel Gunnarsen (1813-1858) and Grete Nilsdr (1820-).
Only one son Simon Abraham is mentioned, with wife Ågot Abelsdr. It says Nils re-married in 1880 with Johanne Jørgine Nilsdr Sjo.

Maybe the children was given up for adoption when Ågot died?

Jan Peter -- Fjelberg was never part of Etne. It has been sliced and diced many times through the years and finally dissolved into another district - but no, never part of Etne.

I wonder what the origin for the HoyKy name is? Haakon seems plausible. I also noticed that Hugne is a common name in Fjelberg.

Census-1900 for Pilot Township Herscher vill., Kankakee, Illinois, has Haskey Boyd (29) [born Jul 1871] as Adopted son by Joseph A Boyd & Sarah Boyd.
Census-1880 for Pilot, Kankakee, Illinois, has Hocke Nelson (8) as "other" to Joseph A Boyd & Sarah Boyd.
The marriage record for HoyKy Boyd shows him as born abt 1875 in Ford County, Ill.

Possibly Haakon Nilsen, born July 1872-1875, Ford, Ill.?
Census-1870 does not show any likely parents named Nelson in Ford, Ill.

Ref:
[lyndal40]
Hocke Nelson Boyd is listed in a tree as born July 15, 1871 Newark, Kendall, Illinois.
Ida Nelson Boyd is listed in a tree as born March 15, 1874 in Herscher, Illinois. Herscher is a village in Kankakee County.

The christening record shows Dina born 28 Apr 1867 at Egge farm in Gran, Oppland.
Gran Hadeland in Oppland is very far from the Skånevik/Fjelberg/Etne area in Hordaland.

I haven't seen any connection as to why they should have changed their lastname to Hilden, but interesting enough, there is a Hilden farm in Gran, Oppland, just south of Egge.

Not necessarily. No immigration list is 100% comprehensive. There is more than one Etne in Norway. There is also Etnedal, perhaps she is from there. And if she left through Stavanger, you are out of luck, list there was destroyed. We often overlook the passenger lists right on this site, its a search engine on the main page.

Any adult Nelsons (from Etne, Skånevig or Fjelberg) who died in Illinois in the 1870s? It seems something must have happened to their parents?
Family relations in these settings are strong, so maybe Joe or Sarah are uncle/aunt to the Nelsons? (Dina, Hockey, Ida).

Well some data but in looking at a tree for Niels Abelsen, it does not seem likely that he is the father of any of the three Nelson children, Dina, Hockse and Ida.

There are a lot of connections between families but still no parents of Dina, Hokse or Ida or even one of them.

It could, but it can come from any Norwegian named Niels, Nils or Nels and we have yet to find one that seems to be the right one.

The reason we do not think it is Niels Mikkelsen from Fjellberg is that in the 1865 Census he and wife Agothe Abelsdatter had not yet had children.

And between the 1865 date and the birth of Abel Mikael and Mikael Elias Nilsen born July 9, 1868 I have only found for Niels Mikkllsen and Agathe Abelsdatter one child Malene Helene born in 1866. The family with five children can be found at Stølsdal Bjellebø in the 1875 Census

Nils Mikkelsen is confusing, and there's not much about him in the local farm history book for Fjelberg.

I noticed there are two Nils Mikkelsen in the area.
The one I referred to previously is likely wrong. He is born 1853 and married on 26. May 1880 with Johanne Jørgine Nilsdr Sjo.
He is Nils Mikkelsen Landa, son of Mikkel Gunnarson and Grete Nilsdotter, was born on 14. Mar 1853 in Sæbø nedre, Fjelberg, Hordaland, was christened on 16. Mar 1853 in Eid kyrkje, Fjelberg, Hordaland, died on 16. Apr 1908 in Landa, Fjelberg, Hordaland at age 55, and was buried on 24. Apr 1908 in Eid kyrkje, Fjelberg, Hordaland.
He is mentioned in 1865 in Sæbø øvre, Fjelberg, Hordaland. 13 yo, Farmhand.
He is mentioned in 1875 in Landa, Fjelberg, Hordaland. Sailor

I believe the correct Nils Mikkelsen is this one:
Nils Mikkelson Hamn 1833-1923
Farm: Stølsdalen under Bjellebø, Fjelberg Hordaland.
Marriage 1: Agate Abelsdotter Dørem 1829-1893.
Children:
Malene Helene
Helga Severine 1874. Parents lived at Gjerde when Helga was born.
Twins Mikel Elias Nelson and Abel Mikel Nelson are not mentioned in reference to this family...

Marriage 2: Ida Gurine Kolbeinsdotter Toftekalven 1862-1952
Children:
Akseline
Bjørge 1894
Ågot 1899, married Torvald Johannesson Eide
Ingeborg Serine Jansdatter
Malene Nilsdatter, married Torstein Torsteinsen Dyrnes
3 of them emigrated to America

Further digging into who did Nels Thorson marry. He married Anne J Enger daughter of John Enger and Anne Larsdtter all of Grundy Illinois. John Enger is identified in a tree as the son of Johanes Johnaessen Enge of Skaanvik Hordaland. Johannes Johannessen Enge b 1805 is the son of Johannes Johannessen and Siri Bjørnsdatter. Now we need to see if the records will support this since this makes Nels Thorson and his wife Anna Enger related.

Johannes Johannes Dyviken was baptized Feb 3, 1805 father was Johannes Dyviken (same as Dybvig?). Married as Johanes Johannessen Enge to Anna Larsdatter on May 24, 1845. His second marriage. His father is listed as Johannes Johannessen Dybvig Skannvig. They are married in Etne.

It sticks with me that both those young children are listed as Boarders in the 1880 US census rather than adopted children - so perhaps the adoption took place after that census.
There are a number of "Probate" court record books for Kankakee that are available to browse through page by page, years 1853-1926 through the catalog of FamilySearch.org. I do not have the time to go through all of those to find Houcky and/or Dina/Tina and the Joseph Boyd family and I didn't happen to find an index. I would think that someone who has actual family ties and reason to be very interested would make the time themselves.

Search their CATALOG. I started by searching for Illinois. Then chose to look at the list of places within Illinois which correctly spelled Kankakee for me. Choose Kankakee and see the list of topics they have in their collection for that county. Probate records were one of the topics and when I chose it listed the books and years, old microfillm numbers we used to be able to order and had little camera icons off to the right of each. That icon means you can look at the pages of that book while online in the catalog. The Will books were listed under that topic.
I'm not sure there is any advantage to choosing "Illinois Probate Records are available online, click here." because it seemed to me to include all the books at the same time and I wanted to reduce the number of pages I was scanning through. But you may want to to try both and see which you prefer.

Sometimes searching the CATALOG may not give you an option to view records online BUT you will learn of their existence and where they are to develop other means of access. I've found published history books listed for areas that I was then able to borrow by Inter-Library Loan and helped me immensely in my own family research. Other times the CATALOG may inform you that you must visit one of their Family History Centers to be able to view - and there are many of those all over the world.

A volunteer at a FHC should be able to show you how to simply navigate that system of showing scanned images of items in their HUGE and growing catalog of resources. They have planned to keep adding scanned images to their website - it would be best you learn to use them.

You do not have to be a member of their church to use their FHC and in all the years I've used the one nearest me I've never been preached at or pressured in any manner.

No. I think Nils Mikkelson (Fjeldberg) is out of the question.

Hucken Nelson is likely born in Illinois. Possibly in Ford county on 15 Jul 1872.
Tena Nelson is likely born in Norway. Possibly in Hordaland county on 10 Oct 1869.

I think we could be looking for a male with lastname Nilsen, who emigrated from Stavanger around 1870-1871, possibly with "Tena" and wife/mother.
It could also be that the parents never married, but if they are the parents to both Tena and Hucken, I doubt that is the case.

Nils Mikkelson (Fjeldberg) did not emigrate, so I doubt he is the father of Hucken.
