Hi Guys:
I'm looking for the grandchilren of Anders Nilsen (1790-1872) and Maren Nilsdatter(1801-1858). Their 1st born is Lars, of whom I'm his great grandson, but I'm looking for cousins. I plan on going to Norway in Aug. and want to track 'em down! Will you help? |

You were interested in finding living relatives still in that (here unnamed) area in your 2005 posting. Did you follow the advice given then? |

Thanks Hopkins! I'm not very good at using the digitalarkivet. I did find the 1801 census form I needed. My great grandfather (Lars Andersen) left Norway after his father (Anders) died in 1872. So now I'm on the hunt for relatives still living in Norway, if any. In order his (Lars Andersen) siblings are: Nils Anderson (1828-1886), Ragne Marie Anderstr (b. 1831), Helvig Marie Andersdtr (b. 1834), Anders Martin Andersen (b. 1838) and Nicolea Andersdtr (b. 1841) all from the Ostby Norde farm, Tjolling in Vestfold. |

It is not as difficult as you think, the 1801 census is here Nils Andersen, born 1828 and his family is here Ragne Marie, born 1831 and her family is here Helvig Marie, born 1833 and her family (note that Nicolea is unmarried and is a servant!) is here Anders Martin, born 1838 and his family is here but note that the two oldest daughters could not be his! |

OK, I found a these guys on the 1865 census, but have only found Anders Martin in Tjolling living with his sister (I assume) Ragne Marie but its says they're both married. Quite confusing. I thought she was married to Andreas Thorsen and still on the Ostby Norde farm. I could not find anyone else in 1900, but only know to look in Tjolling. Any clues? |

Why don't you make efforts to consult the "Tjølling bygdebok", 3 volumes by Jan W. Krohn-Holm. It appears to have been published in the1970's and might contain information more updated information on the other descendants of your Anders Nilson (1790-1872) and Maren Nilsdatter(1801-1858). The LDS Family History Library also lists another book about farm histories and vital information on farm residents in Tjølling - "Tjølling : en bygdebok : historisk skildring av bygdens utvikling fra gammel tid ned til kjendte nutidsforhold" by Lorens Berg published in 1915. You can look for someone who may already have either of those books and is willing do to a few limited lookups for you or you can get the book perhaps by Inter-Library Loan and check for yourself. Make sure you have a good Norwegian-English dictionary before you delve into those books. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
Otherwise you can continue to check the Tjølling parish records, censuses, probate files, etc. "...it is time-consuming work to trace all the branches of a family from 100 or 150 years ago down to the present. It is actually much easier to work backwards in time. So it may be quite a job to track down any of your relatives who still live in Norway. No public authority is under any obligation to undertake such an investigation for you. Nevertheless, you have to realize that the task, first and foremost, must be based on your own efforts - unless, of course, you decide to hire a professional genealogist in Norway to do the work for you.
