At the time of some of the children's confirmations the street address was given: 78 Richards Terrace, Cardiff Is this the address of your home?
In the 1881 census, the family was living at Richards Terr: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2W9-QKM3 |

The call for Norwegian relatives appeared in the Tønsberg newspaper Tønsberg blad on August 6 1988. It should be noted that the piece, as it appeared in the paper, was written by a Norwegian journalist and not be Ian Myhre himself. Possibly as a result of this, there is no sign of a distinction between Wales and England in the writing. I have made no attempt to correct the resulting geographical errors in my translation. Thus, anywhere in Great Britain should be on the table when it is said that his great grandfather was taken to England by his parents in 1877-78. Here goes my translation:
Searching for relatives
TØNSBERG – Does any of Tønsberg blad’s readers know if I have any relatives in the Tønsberg area? It is the Englishman Ian L. Myhre from Cardiff who wonders about this in a letter he has written to the newspaper. Myhre would also like to know where his family comes from.
[By] Jan B. Taranrød.
-- My great grandfather, Christian Gabriel Myhre, was born in Tønsberg in 1876. His parents brought him and his brother and sister with them to England around 1877-1878, Myhre writes.
-- His father was Christian Gabriel Myhre, born November 10th 1848 at Holmsbu. He was a ship’s captain, but had his family in Tønsberg. And my grandfather’s mother was Amalie Constance Krøger, born March 9th 1852, possibly in the Drammen area. They were married on January 28th 1873 in Tønsberg.
-- My grandparents settled in Cardiff around 1884, he writes further. They were part of a rather large Norwegian contingent who lived and worked in the harbour area towards the end of the previous and at the beginning of this century. Until recently there was a Norwegian church in Cardiff, and there are plans to restore it as a memorial of the strong trade relations between our two nations.
I know that my great grandparents visited Tønsberg in 1927 – shortly before he died. But unfortunately all contact with Norway has since been lost. I realise that the chances of resuming such a connection are very small, writes Myhre, who tells that he will be in Tønsberg around the 22nd and 23rd of August. Right now he is on vacation in Sogndal. Anyone with information may write to Ian Myhre, Vesterland Feriepark, Postboks 230, 5801 Sogndal. He will be there until August 17th. It is also possible to call there and leave a message. Myhre’s private address in England is 9 Pennylan Terrace, Pennylan, Cardiff CF3 7EU, Great Britain. |

Barbara J Woodford may have been trying on different possible parentages and thought that Christian Gabriel Myhre as the same as C. Myhre but here is a family tree at familysearch and there is no child in the family named Henry b 1883 nor John Peter Johnson: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/KCFH-XKT
Johnson would be such a common name in Chicago that she probably needed to develop some additional information over here before going over there. |

The daughter Karoline Elise Konstanse was baptised in Cardiff already in 1879. Some more here. The name of the mother in the last record is probably wrong. As seen in the death records above, Amalie outlived Kristian by two years. |
