Could you help me find out about Lars J. Offerdahl born 27 MAR 1843 in Sogn, Oppland, Norway. I think his name before Lars was Lewis Iverson as I find that on records on the land here in South Dakota. His wife was Rigndlia Hovland
Birth 24 Dec 1849 in Norway .
I was told he changed his name to Offerdahl but do not know why and I would like to find his father and mother and siblings and when he came to the United States and why.

Confusion about where he was actually from may be better understood when looking for him in the 1865 Norwegian census. For that census he appears to be working as a servant in Sogndal district of Sogn og Fjordane.

When he came to the United States would be easiest found in the US federal censuses where he lived after emigrating.

Lars parents and siblings can be found in the 1865 census for Aardal, Sogn og Fjordane.
Children:
Andfind, born Dec 27 1844, see #5
Mari, born March 26 1847, see #60
Peder, born April 5 1850
Knudt, born Aug 2 1852
Iver, born March 30 Mar 1856
Jens, born Dec 5 1858 |

Ivar Olsen and Kirstine Anfindsdatter were married May 23 1841, see #14.
Ivar Olsen was 29 years and came from Natvig, his father was Ole Andreasen.
Kirstine Anfindsdatter was 22 years and came from Offerdal, her father was Anfind Pedersen. |

A candidate for Rigndlia Hovland may be Ragnilde Erichsdatter, she was born Dec 27 1849 and her parents Erich Olsen and Guroe Nielsdatter were at Hofland when she was baptized, see #19.
Ragnilde (Ragnild Eriksdatter Hofland) left Aardal March 21 1874, see #11.

Lars Iversen Offerdalen (22) from Sogndahl is on the ship Claus Heftye, leaving Bergen April 23rd, 1867.

On this page I think #2 is Iver Iversen Offerdal-------am I reading this right? If so that would be Lars Iversen's brother. |

Lars Iversens father, Iver Olsen was born out of wedlock Nov 11 1812, see 4th record from bottom of left page. His mother was Mari Rasmusdatter, Natvigen and the fader was Ole Andreasen, Natvigen.
Ole Andreasen (10 years old), his parents and siblings in 1801.

Lars Iversens mother, Kirstine Anfindsdatter was born April 15 1820, she was baptized Berthe Kistine April 23, see 3rd record on right page. Her parents were Anfind Pedersen, Fodnæs and Marte Larsdatter.
Anfind Pedersen, his mother and siblings in 1801. |
