My great grandfather Helge August Olsen Myhre left Stavanger and travelled London where he eventually lived and married. Probably between 1848 and 1855.
We have no idea how or when he travelled. He was born in Drammen in 1831. His father was Ole Hansen Hansen Myhre married to Sara Marie nee Stoltenberg.
Any information would be helpful.

Phil, you can help by posting your sources in England (or any other). For example, you may have documentation or family stories that lead you to believe he travelled to England sometime 1848-1855.
Confirmation record, Stavanger Domkirken Helge August Olsen born 04 October 1831 in Drammen link
Here's a very incomplete transcription of an 1859 marriage record, bride not named: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DJF-Q2F
A Geni family tree tells this; no source is noted. Ole Hansen Myhre's children aren't noted on the tree.
"Ungkar Ole Hansen Myhre, hadde etternavnet sitt fra Myhra gård i Kongsbergs-området.

Translating JaneC's Geni family tree story:
Bachelor Ole Hansen Myhre had his last name from the Myhra farm in the Kongsberg area. He was baptized on November 6, 1790 in Kongsberg. 26 years old, on July 6, 1816, he married Sara Marie Jacobsdatter Stoltenberg in Tangen Church. Both were 26. They settled in Bragernes (Drammen) and in the years 1817 to 1831 they had 7 children, all born in Bragernes. Ole became a hatter, and from 1819 he was referred to as master hatter (master hat maker). He did well, and owned 2 houses in Drammen (Bragernes area). But he got sick, the business went down, and in 1831 he became bankrupt. On January 2nd, 1836, he died of tuberculosis and was buried on January 11th from the church of St. Mary, only 46 1/2 years old. In 1841 the eldest son, Hans Bernt, moved to Stavanger and settled there, and later in the 1840s the mother Sara Marie with the other six children followed. Of the 7 children, a daughter emigrated to America, and 2 sons to England. The widow, Sara Marie died April 21st 1852, ab. 63 years old, and was buried in Stavanger.
Brother Hans Bernt Myhre was a member of the Norwegian Parlament in the 1850's, representing Stavanger. |

There is a Famly Tree on Ancestry.com that indicates he died in London in 1864. The source is as follows but the name on this record is a little different than the one we have been seeing.

A possible arrival in 1857, no first name so a little difficult to be certain. However the occupation is listed as Machinist which is not a good fit.

In the 1871 UK census, Emily is shown as a widow, living in Islington wiith daughter Emily aged 10 and son Augustus aged 7 - consistent with her hasband dyinmg ca 1864.
Can't find any of them in the 1881 or later censuses |

In the 1861 census, Helge's occupation is given as "watchmaker - jobber". If he arrived in Hull 4 years earlier, maybe without a good command of English and/or facing a busy immigration officer, his occupation might have been captured as machinist when he might have been more highly skilled.. Having some skills as a machinist is maybe not a million miles away from working in the watchmaking business. |

Thanks for all the information. It is the first time we may have a link to Helge August Olsen Myhre's arrival in UK, if this is him.
We have been to London and established where his business was in 'Minories', a street in London and to several addresses where he and Emily lived. Also St Boltoph Church at the end of 'Minories' where my grandfather was christened.
We have also visited Drammen and the church where Ole and Sara Marie Stoltenberg were married.
I will search more on the vessel 'Courier' sailing to London.
Thank you

Thanks to JaneC and yourself for the information and translation. We have records of Helge August Myhre living and marriage in London, the birth of their children (my grandparents) and christening in London and Helge's death in London in June 1864. We dont have Ole Hansen Myhre and his wife Sara Marie details of seven children names.
Is there a way of finding the names of the daughter who emigrated to America and when/how and also two sons to England? We know of only one, Helge August Olsen Myhre as mentioned above.
Look forward to any assistance you can provide.
Thanks,
Phil Myhre Auckland New Zealand |
