On one of Betsy's children's death certificate Betsy's surname was given as "Runyan" which may be what the R in her name stands for.

Good to point out about the place of origin / point of embarkation confusion, so Betsy might be from some other place than Bergen but just leaving from Bergen.

The grooms mother Helma Carlson was widowed and married John Johnson.

Was John Johnson Betsey Johnsons brother?

I'm a little slow in picking up on this. (Just helped someone find his birth parents after a 30+ year search!) Charles Miller's father is confirmed as Johan Johansson and his mother as Sofia Karlsdotter--both from Sweden.

I just heard from my contact in Boone County, Iowa. She told me it may take awhile for her to check records. I've already been waiting since September.

Searching in the 1865 census looking at farm names saw this one named Ranum which might be an approximate to Runyan.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f61731&gardpostnr=417&merk=417#ovre

Johan Torbergson at the head with a daughter named Elen Bergithe age 12. Elen's age didn't match but looked her baptism up and found she was actually born 10 Dec 1849 Baptized #1 in 1850:

Source information: Nord-Trøndelag county, Mære in Sparbu, Parish register (official) nr. 735A07 /1 (1849-1862), Birth and baptism records women 1850, page 35.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2491&idx_id=2491&uid=ny&idx_side=-38

I haven't found anything further on her in Sparbu, not confirmation, not migration (utflyttedes), not death (to 1871) and she is not a good match, as no known Bergen connection, birthdate doesn't match (even though the time is approximately correct) etc.

Perhaps someone else on forum could take a look...

A long shot, Beret Anne b. 28 Feb 1850 Kvernes here she is in the 1865 census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=f61553&gardpostnr=859&personpostnr=5504&merk=5504#ovre

Baptism #33:
Kildeinformasjon: Møre og Romsdal fylke, Kvernes, Ministerialbok nr. 568A10 (1830-1853), Fødte og døpte 1850, side 141.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2281&idx_id=2281&uid=ny&idx_side=-150

No apparent Johnson or Runyan connection....

Has a search been made for the son Gustav in the Iowa State census of 1925?

Last night I googled "Gust Anderson" Ringsted, Iowa (like that) and got a potload of newspaper references from Estherville and Estherville area newspapers from the 1930s to 1970s, including snippets of the obituary of his wife Emma (Runneberg) and Gust's obituary and estate filing / settlement notices. The newspapers are in newspaperarchive's holdings. He died in April 1971. Perhaps getting his death certificate, if you don't already have it might be in order.

Probably the brother Alexander at findagrave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=anderson&GSfn=alex&GSby=1891&GSbyrel=before&GSdy=1970&GSdyrel=after&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=28115542&df=all&

Obvious typo in data at findagrave. Death year on the actual headstone is 1972.

SSDI info at familysearch:
Given Name: Alex
Middle Name:
Surname: Anderson
Name Suffix:
Birth Date: 21 May 1887
Social Security Number: 475-05-4265
State: Minnesota
Last Place of Residence: Nez Perce, Idaho
Previous Residence Postal Code: 83501
Event Date: November 1972
Age: 85

Another possible Elisabet Anne b. 21 Feb 1851 father is Peder Johanneson and from farm "Riisholmen" #19:

Source information: Møre og Romsdal county, Kvernes, Parish register (official) nr. 568A10 (1830-1853), Birth and baptism records 1851, page 148.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2281&idx_id=2281&uid=ny&idx_side=-157

In the 1865 census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f61553&gardpostnr=553&merk=553#ovre

In the 1886 tax list for Kvernes, Møre og Romsdal at least one of the Riisholmen named farms is called "Rangøen med Høgriisholmen". I don't know if it is the same farm as the family was on in 1851 and 1865 but both Riisholmen and Rangøen begin with R and end with en which is vaguely reminiscent of
the structure of Runyan and at least pronounced Rangøen will have a sound similar to the yan part of Runyan in øen.

Perhaps someone else on forum would look into this candidate?

Thank you for these new tips, jkmarler! These are definitely worth pursuing while I wait for the Boone County records.

This is the youngest son of Alexander and Betsey. He was born a few months after his father's death. I have contacted this cemetery before hoping to get more information, but no response. I haven't been able to find anything else about this family in that area other than a son is buried in the same cemetery. I will try for a death certificate.

She has a brother named John. Not sure that means anything, but I love that birth date and the name.

Yes. I have found Gust on the 1925 Iowa census. He's in Jack Creek, Emmet County with wife Emma. It lists his father as Alec Anderson born in Sweden and his mother as Betsy Johnson, age 70 last birthday, born in Norway.

As a side note, next to them on the 1925 Iowa census is George L. Johnson, age 28, who lists his father as John Johnson, born in Norway and age 75 on last birthday. His mother is Martha Wenos, age 73 last birthday, also born in Norway. Don't think there is a connection because John would have been born around 1850, but neighbors who are Johnsons get my attention.
