Rereading some of the earlier posts revealed that the Anderson family had interactions with at least 4 different churches through the years. If the baptismal and confirmation records still exist for Betsy's children they may be found in the records. Within them you might find a mention of one of Betsy's relatives who served as a godparent or witness. If the two youngest boys were confirmed, as would be usual practice when about 15, provided they still lived in the proposed Wadena place then you might find confirmation that this is indeed your family. It appears that Betsy continued her affiliation with Swedish vs Norwegian churches throughout her life.
This is a list of Swedish American (not just Lutheran) churches in in the known and speculated residences of Betsy Anderson according to a Wiki at familysearch.org :
"The Swedish American churches listed below have microfilmed records in the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at the Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. These microfilms are not available via interlibrary loan but may be searched in person or a search may be requested for a fee. See http://www.augustana.edu/x13917.xml for years of availability, guidelines, and research request forms."

Yes indeed I did make a mistake. The one posted above's parents were not Johannes Abrahamson on Tjøtta, so sister of Johanne could be back in play. |

Confirmed in 1867 number 14 page 191. Date is Sept 29
However this person may have married in 1877 and thus would be another dead end
Digitalakivet. April 6, 1877 in Klepp see number 6 in the marriage section |

It's number 6 and looks to me like the target Elisabeth, her father is Johannes Abrahamson, she was born on Tjøtta: SAST, Klepp sokneprestkontor, 30BA/L0006: Parish register (official) no. A 6, 1871-1885, p. 274 Quick link: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/kb20070103340479

Jane's idea of a listing of the birth years for Betsy was a good idea, so I'm emulating it with this list of Betsy's name:
1870 Betsy Johnson (probable)
1874 Betsy R Johnson
found to be a bad transcription 1874 Betsy B Johnson 1880 Betsey Anderson 1895 Bessie A Anderson 1900 Bertha Anderson (probable) 1900 Btrice Jansensen 1910 Betsy Anderson 1920 Bessie Anderson 1934 Mrs. Betsy Ann Anderson nee Johnson 1934 Betsy Bell Anderson 1957 Betsy Johnson
1964 Betsy Runyan found to be a red herring |

I can expand a bit on the list from Jane and jkmarler: (Great idea, by the way!)
1870 Betsy Johnson (probable, Northwood, IA census)) 1874 Betsy R Johnson (transcription of marriage record, Ancestry.com) 1874 Betsy B Johnson 1880 Betsey Anderson (census, Pilot Mound, IA) 1895 Bessie A Anderson (census, Pilot Mound, IA) 1900 Bertha Anderson (probable, census, Wadena, MN) 1910 Betsy Anderson (census, Marshall, IA, living with daughter Ida) 1920 Bessie Anderson ??? 1930 Betsy Anderson (census, Brown County, SD, living with son Oscar) 1934 Mrs. Betsy Ann Anderson nee Johnson (her obituary) 1934 Betsy Bell Anderson (her death certificate, daughter Ida the informant) 1957 Betsy Johnson (Son Elmer's death record transcript) 1964 Betsy Runyan (Son Oscar's death certificate) 1970 Betsy Anderson (Daughter Anna's death certificate)
I have spent some time filling in gaps in the Where Are Those Andersons spreadsheet that I started years ago. In particular I was trying to account for all of Betsy's children (except for John who had moved to Canada) on the 1900 census. I found a "probable" for son Oscar in Havelock, Pochahontas, Iowa, living as a boarder with the RUNYAN family. The census states Mr. Runyan was born in Sweden. Oscar is the one whose death certificate lists his mother as Betsy Runyan.
I have to agree the "Bertha" found in Wadena, MN in 1900 could well be Betsy even though a few things don't line up and I've never known of a Minnesota connection. It would make sense that only her two youngest would still be living at home then, and the birth months for the two children listed match perfectly with sons Elmer Clarence (listed as Oliver--could be Clarence?) and Alex. |

According to the actual census schedule from 1900 Bertha owns land. That would be something that could be verified at the Wadena county courthouse in the grantee / grantor lists (unless it was a Federal homestead). Also the name that is transcribed as Oliver could also be interpreted as "Almer."
So Runyans were from Sweden. No, other censuses say Indiana and in Iowa 1925 William G. Runyan, the head of household in the 1900 census (the one with Oscar Anderson), states parents are Andrew G. Runyan and Elizabeth McBride or McBude both dead and both from Indiana. So I guess we might have to consider that the Runyan clue is a red herring.
William G. Runyan's marriage in Boone county: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XJC9-LXT
The 1920 census is also a probable in Great Falls, Montana. Also there are two transcriptions of the marriage record one with B for middle initial and the other with R. |

Yes there are some well documented family trees on William G Runyan on Ancestry.com and looking at them I cannot see any connection between William G to either Norway or Sweden. Here is the first record of William G . that i have found.
Wm G Runyan in the 1860 United States Federal Census Name: Wm G Runyan Age: 2 Birth Year: abt 1858 Gender: Male Birth Place: Iowa Home in 1860: Pilot Mound, Boone, Iowa Post Office: Carsons Point Family Number: 724 Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name Age Peter Runyan 73 A J Runyan 33 Elizabeth J Runyan 29 Maria Runyan 8 Mary C Runyan 5 Wm G Runyan 2 Nancy Rector 60
His wife is listed as having been born in Scotland
Helen Georgina Ewing Fraser 1865–1942 BIRTH 04 JUL 1865 • Kennethmont,Aberdeen,Scotland DEATH 1942 • Iowa
From one of the trees "Helen married when very young. Perhaps the marriage of her mother within just a few weeks made this a more attractive option. Boone County adjoins Greene County to the west. This is where Helen's family settled after their immigration."
Here it gets a little tricky as the wife may need some further investigation. |

The 1920 census is also a probable in Great Falls, Montana.
Probably so on the Runyan clue.
There is a "probable" on the 1920 census for Betsy, but the address does not coincide with her known address at that time, and neither does the family information. In a letter written in 1920 she says, "The family I am with now, there are only 3 in it the man, wife and a two year old child so it is quite nice." On the flip side, I have found the census entry for Betsy's known address, and it lists a family of 4. Puzzling! |
