Thank you, jkmarler, for the wealth of information on this family. I was braced for disappointment, but also hopeful that something might connect to Betsy because of the DNA. I will look at Dan's other great-great grandparents before moving up a generation. This one looked the most promising, so that's why I started there. |

You didn't note that target Britha's brother came to US in 1879...And his bill was paid for in America. |

Might be a good find. The farm he is working on belongs to a man from Vik.
Ole Olsen Tenold Jr in the U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current Name: Ole Olsen Tenold Jr Birth Date: 28 Nov 1841 Birth Place: Vik kommune, Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Norway Death Date: 6 Apr 1914 Death Place: Kensett, Worth County, Iowa, USA Cemetery: Kensett Cemetery Burial or Cremation Place: Kensett, Worth County, Iowa, USA Has Bio?: Y Children: Henry E. Tenold Alfred Oliver Tenold
The person identified as Bertie Olson Male is actually a female based on the original census document. Born in 1861.
Might it be Britha Olsdatr Mørkeskog, the person next to Lars on the emigration document and just above him on the digitalarkivet record as well.

These are all great finds, and I have one to share, too. There are actually two Betsy Johnsons who could be candidates for my Betsy Johnson on the 1870 Northwood, Iowa, census.
#1 on page 2. Betsy (19) is living with the Simon Boyd famliy as a housekeeper. #2 on page 9. This Betsy is living with the Chas. Wardall family as a domestic servant. Her age is transcribed as 11, but it is written over so that it's hard to tell for sure. To me it looks like it was 16 or 18 before being changed. Living immediately next door is Louis Gullackson (37) and his wife "G" (26), both born in Norway. Not sure who he is just yet, but the Gullackson name jumped out at me.
But continue on to page 11 of the Northwood census and you find the family of ASLAK GULLAKSON that I think matches to the son of Gullach Johannesen and Cicila Aslachsdtr. That Aslak was born 26 Jun 1819 in Krekke, Kirkebo/Kyrkebø, S-Fjrd. He is the BROTHER of Johannes Gullaksen (discussed above as a possible father of Betsy) who fathered children with 4 women.
Now I'm going to go back and take a closer look at the new stuff posted today, but I wanted to toss out what I found, too. I'm pretty excited! Thank you, jkmarler and lyndal40. |

Just might be the right Aslak. In the 1900 Census his birth is given as Jun 1819. Part of the record shown
Name: Aslak Gullickson [Ablah Gullickson] Age: 80 Birth Date: Jun 1819 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1900: Northwood, Worth, Iowa Race: White Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1852 Relation to Head of House: Father in Law [Father-in-law] Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Ingabor Gullickson Marriage Year: 1853 Years Married: 47 Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway
I noticed in the 1860 Census that the first son Erick was born in Norway. This is likely him.
Erich Aslaksen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Erich Aslaksen Gender: Male Birth Date: 28 des 1852 (28 Dec 1852) Baptism Date: 1 jan 1853 Baptism Place: , Vik I Sogn, Sogn Og Fjordane, Norway Father: Aslak Gulaksen Mother: Ingeborg Sjursdr FHL Film Number: 278156

Following a Family Tree on Ancestry.com that has identified Louis Gullackson as this person.
Lars Gulliksen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name: Lars Gulliksen Gender: Male Birth Date: mai 1832 (May 1832) Baptism Date: 18 mai 1832 (18 May 1832) Baptism Place: Voss,Hordaland,Norway Father: Gulleik Larss. Mother: Marthe Steffensdr
Maybe a little digging can confirm that. |

Quickly running through the utflyttedes from Vik between 1866-1873, these are possibles: 1866 #55 Brithe Johannesdtr Balreat (?) aged 27
1866 #60 Brithe Johannesdtr Hopperstad aged 15
eliminated on page 12 this topic 1869 #29 Brithe Johnsdtr aged 34 1873 #12 Brithe Johannsdtr aged 20
I can't help but think we're on the right trail after finding Aslak Gullickson, a son of the GGGgrandfather of my mother's DNA match, on the 1870 census in Northwood, Iowa, with Betsy. I don't think I will be able to get this Brithe off my mind until we find her after 1865. If there is no marriage or death record for her in Norway, is it possible she emigrated without leaving a record in Norway?
I'm also trying to find if Gullak Johannesen (1791 - 1819) and Cecilia Aslachdr (1780 - 1819) had children other than Aslak and Johannes. So far I haven't come up with anything.
It feels like Betsy is hiding right in front of us! I'm open to suggestions on where to look next. |

It is entirely possible that Brithe left Norway without leaving a record of the move at her parish. |

Searched for any Britha Johnsdatter who died between 1866 and 1875 in Vik, total is 9. None of these match target Britta as to age. (Ages were: 7 days, 9 weeks, 2 years, 3 years +, 47 years, 50 years, 58 years, 75 years, 89 years.) Of these 9, 4 are of such an age that they would have been born between 1866 and 1875, so remainder is 5. None of the decedants have Vigøren as associated place name.
Searched for any Britha Johnsdatter who married in Vik between 1866-1875, there are three. None have a father named Johannes Gullakson and none with associated place name of Vigøren..
There was one potential move-in to Vik between 1866-1875 coming in 1869 from Hyllestad named Brithe Jonasdatter or Jensdatter.
And I have to add to the previous four departures Brithe Johnsdatter Ovrid age 17 1/2 who left with her family in 1868 who was discussed ad nauseum earlier in the topic.
In the 1865 census for Vik there are a total of 40 Br* Jo* residing in Vik. In the 1875 census for Vik there are a total of 34 Br* Jo* residing in Vik.
Circumstantially, target Brithe is likely to have been faddernes as her father and brother were for at least one of her sister Guri / Gurine's children's baptisms and she is not there. |

Since Johannes Gullaksen died on 26 January 1907 in Vik in Sogn og Fjordane, there may be a dødfallsprotokol for him, which if the force be with you, it might be available or the archives might search for you. What you are hoping to find with it is either the names of each of the survivors and their age and locations or a statistical category such as 3 adult children 1 in America etc. You won't know until you go! I assume the Bergen archives might be able to help you via email:

Thank you for this suggestion and the additional research in your previous post. I will definitely try emailing them, and if the force be with me, they will speak English! |

English is the required second language in Norway. Most of the young ones, fresher from their school experience, do well. The older ones probably understand but are more reticent to speak it. |
