Hi, Borge.
I live in New Zealand.
I would be interested in helping transcribe the list of passengers on 1872 Hovding (Oslo, Norway to Napier, NZ) as a number of my ancestors arrived on this ship and settled in Norsewood.
Is this possible?
I am also trying to get copies of the 1872 Hovding arrival at Napier, NZ, from our National Archives to compare names (detect name changes) and trace what happened to them.
(My LIVING grandmother was born in 1906 and will have memories of some of the immigrants &/or their children.)
That would be absolutely great. However, I do not have any copies of the Høvding lists (there are none in Norway, only police registers of emigrants). It would be great if you could get the copies from your national archives, and we could compare them to the Norwegian police registers of departing emigrants on the Høvding. |

Good idea. I have already written to the National Archives.
If/when I get the list, I'll let you know. |

My great great grandparents are passengers on the ship SS Woodham that sailed from Christiania July 28 1872 and arrived Quebec - Montreal Aug. 16 1872. They are Ole and Andrine Ottersen.
I wonder if I could have a copy of the scan of the original passenger list????
thanks so much!!!!!

They are Kari Gundersdatter Brelie, Oline Olsdatter Kvernum and Klara Larsdatter. Is there a way to get a copy of this list? Thanks to all, Dianna

Any chance you have October 1880 passenger lists. My GGgrandfather Tosten Torgimson Liekeren arrived in Quebec City ( or Montreal) with his family wife Anna, daughter Anna, daughter Gjerterude, son Tosten and son Erick in that month.

National Archives of Canada: "The passenger lists from 1865 to 1922 have been digitized and are available online. The database allows you to access the passenger lists by name of ship, port and date of departure and/or port and date of arrival."

Hi, I am a Norwegian-American living in Os i Hordaland. Most of my ancestors came from Norway. I have a great-great grandmother that I can't place where she was born. I have no pikenavn, just a first name. According to the gravestone in Wisconsin her name is Jarrond, married name is Nelson. She was born on 2 feb 1828 in Norway. According to a US census form she emigrated to the US in 1855. Do the passenger lists exist for 1855? I could help in transcribing them.
mvh

Yes passenger lists exist for 1855. This website has a database of emigrants (not complete). Look for the link at the top of this page. Ancestry.com website has databases of immigrants entering USA and Canada and to some extent other nations (again the databases are not complete). Ancestry charges a subscription fee, but allows two weeks of free use on a "trial" subscription. Family Search is another useful research tool. The Norwegiann Archives also has emigrants database at http://www.arkivverket.no/eng/Digitalarkivet

Worth a try: The most common name in Norway was Olsen. Jorond Olson age 32 (b. 1828) in 1860 in The town Of Primrose, Dane C. Wisc. link

And check for non standard spellings. For instance Jørond is sometimes rendered as Gjørand.
What do you know about her kids? Have you collected all the data and documents on them? Sometimes mother's "maiden" name is recorded on birth records, baptismal records, death certificates and the like of her children.
What were the names of all her children in the order of their birth? Sometimes the immigrants over here practiced the same customs they would have in the old country regarding how the children were named.
Who were the "faddernes" the godparents or witnesses to her children's baptisms? Sometimes they were friends from the old home place and often they were relatives.
Here is a Joran Larsdatter (Larson) born 1 day before your gal's date. She might be worth exploring to see if she survived to adulthood and if she migrated:

Will there be a chance of eventually getting a passenger list for the Ship Familien sailing date May 1855 from Drammen to Quebec? |
