OK here we go, I now have scans of more than 100 passenger lists for Norwegian ships arriving Quebec waiting for volunteers to transcribe them. Anyone feeling like adopting a list?

Hi Borge, I will give it a try. Hopefully I will have a little more spare time after the kitchen is remodeled. On a selfish note are any lists from 1868? My Great grandmother came over then and I would love to locate her. If not any year will do.

Yes, I have all those 1868 lists! Some of them are quite faded and hard to make out, but the majority is nice and clear, check the 1868 index and let me know if there is a particular list you would like to start with.

There is no need to know Norwegian, and we'll all be around to help if anyone needs any help

I should say that some of the scans are quite big files, so let me know if your e-mail accounts have any limits on the size of attachments.

I use AOL, If you use Aol I can receive up to 16mb. If you use another service I can only receive 2mb total for the whole e-mail. If you can send me the ships that left from Porgrunn and Skien from 1868 to 1870 we can kill 2 birds with one stone. I may find Adolph in the process of transcribing. Thanks

I'll send you a Skien list, short one to start with. I'll tell you that though - some those Skien and Porsgrund lists are among the hardest ones to do, as many of them are quite faded.

Hi Borge, It is hard to pick. What I know is that she was from Lesja and so would probably have left from Christiana. She left with 4 children and the story goes that they picked up passengers in Ireland that had Cholera and when she arrived in Minnesota all of her children were dead. Her first child in Minnesota was born in May, 1969 so she was in Minnesota by Sept 1968 so I would guess a July or August arrival.
So how about a smaller file leaving from Christiana and arriving in July or August. That way I can get experiance on a small scale and then move on to bigger ones
I don't think I have any size restrictions on my e-mail, just the length of time to receive large files since I am on dial up.

Chris - I could not reach you by the e-mail address you have registered here, could you e-mail me your current address please? - I have some scans ready for you. Let me know what format (application) you want to use for the transcription and I will send you a template.

A little unsolicited advice!! It is a great help to me in transcribing lists to obtain examples of 19th century handwriting. A quick search on Google.com and the Handwriting/Script section on Cyndislist provide various examples. An important one is American Spencerian script that was used in the US until 1925. The ship's captain, crews, harbormasters were from all over the world so German, Swedish, English , etc. handwriting needs to be deciphered and the examples really come in handy. It doesn't take long to get used to the old handwriting.

You must have been reading my mind Jo Anne. I was just about to ask that question. Thanks for the advice.

I would also like to contribute. If I can choose, I would prefer departures from Telemark.

The template format should be Excel.

Ok, good people - the response is overwhelming, I'll supply you all with the lists and templates as fast as I can prepare and distribute them. (I need you to send me an e-mail from the forum so that I get your return address, as I can not send attachment from the forum directly) . Please, do read the section about Special signs (the Histform standard) on the topic Transcriptions & Getting started in the mean time. If you need any help or have any questions do not be afraid to ask on the forum, we are all in this together!
