I have been trying to retreive the manifest of the SS Consuelo which arrived at New York from Hull on october 8 (or 7). But it doesn't seem to be registered in the database. I have been searching thorougly via the jewishgen missing manifests search machine without any luck. Does anyone know if the Ellis Island database is incomplete? |

From Ellisisland F.A.Q
Q. I know my ancestor(s) came through Ellis. Why can’t I find them?
A. There are about 150 CDs where the image was misindexed during the scanning process. That is, the passenger name is not correctly linked to the proper manifest page. The result is that no image is available even if you find the passenger record. Also, about 1-2 rolls of microfilm - were too poor for the volunteers to be able to transcribe so those names are totally missing from the database. In addition, there may be inaccuracies in family stories, spelling errors, transcription errors, hard-to-read handwriting, etc. The important thing to remember is that there are 22.5 million records in this data base and some level of error was unavoidable.
What year was the arrival?

Hi, according to http://www.cimorelli.com/, the steamer Consuelo from Wilson Line, arrived in New York on October 8th, 1902. The ships Minneapolis and Sardegna should have arrived on the same date.
Several thousand Italians arrived that day, the Sardegna manifests for October 8th are there, together with the manifests for the ship The Karamania, both sailing from Naples, Italy. I could not find Minneapolis either, on October 8th 1902
The ship Consuelo is not in the list of ship names as they appear in the Ellis Island Database... Strange...

And neither is Minneapolis. Is there any way to find out if the original manifests exist or not? |

But I have found other arrivals of the Consuelo, in other years than 1902. Strangely, when I searched for Consuelo at Ellis Island via "the white form" at Jewishgen, the only positive search result I got was when I searched for surnames starting with "J". Then I got six persons arriving with Consuelo in 1903, 1905 etc. But when I tried to search with surnames starting with other letters the search broke down every time. |

What interest do you have in the ship? As far as I know she was mainly in the cargo trade, and in 1902 the Wilson Line had no emigration agents in Norway, only cargo agents. I think there was some kind of agreement with the other great transatlantic companies to not compete with them in the Scandinavian emigration market in return for operating the feeder service between Scandinavia and England. I know I read something about that somewhere. |

I am trying to locate Oleanna Johnsen, who left Kristiania on the Angelo on september 19. 1902. As the Angelo was a Wilson ship I assumed the Consuelo was the most obvious alternative for the trip from England to USA. But if the ship was a cargo carrier I guess I will have to reconsider. Is that why there is no manifest in the Ellis Island data base, because the ship didn't carry any passengers? And if she wasn't on the Consuelo, what ship would she possibly be travelling with? |
