Hi,
I did a quite throughly search in the norw. 1900-census for your family, without any luck. I assume Gus was named Gustav in Norway.
I found 12 persons named Gustav Gulbrandsen (incl. alternate spelling), born 1888-1890.
None of them had a brother called John...
Last name covered these spellings: gulbrand, gulbrandatr, gulbrandatter, gulbrandd, gulbranddater, gulbranddatter, gulbrands, gulbrandsd, gulbrandsdater, gulbrandsdatr, gulbrandsdatter, gulbrandsder, gulbrandsdr, gulbrandsdt, gulbrandsdtr, gulbrandsdttr, gulbrandsen, gulbrandson, gulbrandsrud, gulbrandss, gulbrandssen, gulbrandsø, gulbrandtsen, gulbrans, gulbransd, gulbransdatr, gulbransdatter, gulbransdt, gulbransdtr, gulbransen, gulbransgaard, gulbranson, gulbransson, gulbrds, gulbretsdtr, gulbretson, gulbrs, guldaasen, guldbrad, guldbrand, guldbrands, guldbrandsd, guldbrandsdat, guldbrandsdatr, guldbrandsdatter, guldbrandsdr, guldbrandsdtr, guldbrandsdttr, guldbrandsen, guldbrandsgaard, guldbrandsgård, guldbrandson, guldbrandssen, guldbrandsø, guldbrandsøn, guldbrandtr, guldbrans, guldbransdatter, guldbransen, guldbrantsen, gullbrandsd, gullbrandsdtr, gullbrandson, gullbrandsson..

Do you know if they emigrated before 1900?
Jan
