I am moving to Europe pretty soon and I thought I’d take this chance to go to Norway and check out my family’s homestead, the thing is, I can’t find anything about it anywhere. My great grandfather’s name was Brosten and all I know about the homestead is what is written on the picture that we have of it hanging in the hallway wall. It says Espedal-Sandsgt and underneath that it has written Stavanger. I know Stavanger is the city/town that’s closest to the Brosten “perish”, Standnes 1922. I have no idea if that made any sense at all. :) If anyone knows anything that might help me a little, I’d really appreciate it!

You should have given us more to go on. What is your great grandfather's first name? When did he come to the USA? Do you know which port he left from?
Anyway. Sandsgt. is a street name in Stavanger (Sandsgt.=Sand's street). There are 16 people with the Surname Espedal living in stavanger in 1900 according to the 1900 census: http://129.177.171.80/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f01103&spraak=&metanr=1016
Search for "Etternavn" = surname" begynner med" Esped
There are noone with the surname Brost*(en) in all of Norway in the 1900 census. The name could have been americanized or changed after he came to the USA.
Standnes is probably meant to be Sandnes, a small town just outside of Stavanger.
If you supply us with more information on your great grandfather you will probably get more clues.

There are some Braastens emigrating from Stavanger. You will find them in Sandnes in the 1900 census.

There is a farm Braastein in Høiland parish in Rogaland fylke (same fylke as Stavanger and Sandnes. The Braastens in Sandnes probably origin from this farm. My guess is that Braaste(i)n is the name you are looking for. If you post your g-grandfather's first name and other information you might have, maybe the mystery will be solved.

Just another hint: Earlier (i.e. in the 1865 census) the town Sandnes and the farm Braastein was both in the Høiland parish. Later Sandnes became a parish of its own.

Oh wow! Thank you so much for all this information. My great grandfather’s name in Norway was Einar Braasten but was changed to Andrew Brosten when he came to America. Maybe that will help a little bit more.

Ok, I know that this is my great grandfather...Click Here because THIS confirms that he immigrated to America in 1881. What I don't understand is why Rasmussen is also in the box where his last name is.

Rasmussen is the patronymic (son of) name and Braasten was the farm name (address).
Rikard, born 1867, emigrating 1883, must be his brother Richard.

Hi,
this must be Andrew Brosten in the 1865-census.

The farm is nowadays called BRÅSTEIN, and resides in Sandnes muncipality, Rogaland county.

Click here to locate the farm at the online map. Search for "Stedsnavn" = Bråstein, and "Kommune" = Sandnes. Choose the hit "Bråstein (Gard)". Bråstein (Stasjon) is the railway station...
You will see that the farm resides by the Bråstein water.
