I am looking for information on Burdines GOODMANSON(I'm pretty sure that wasn't the way it was always spelled) and Ellen Julia GUNDERSON. She was born Feb 1863. They were both born in Koppervik. They immigrated to the US in 1885. Stayed with friends in LaSalle County,Illinois for 4 years then moved to Benton County,Iowa. He died in Benton County in 1900. Any help would be appreciated as I have hit a brick wall with the GOODMANSON surname!!

Could that be GUDMUNDSEN or GUDMUNSEN?

Those are good possibilities as I am sure the spelling was different.

According to Ellen's obit it was either Burdines or Burdinius. I don't have it in front of me. I will see if I can find out a little more information as far as dates. That might help....

Hi Tami,
this looks to be your Ellen Julia GUNDERSON in the 1865-census.
She lives on the farm "Kobbervig" in Kobbervig, Avaldsnes parish. The district/municipality is now called Karmøy, and is in Rogaland county. Elens parents are Gunder Gundersen (44) and Elen Larsdatter (44). They are born in Avaldsnes ca 1822.

And I found these ones in the same parish: Berdinus Hansen (10), Berdines Olsen (13) and Berdines Larsen (14).

It might not be your Burdines, but Berdinus/Berdines could be the firstname you're looking for...

The closest port of emmigration would be Stavanger.

The list of emmigrants from Stavanger contains 92 men named Berdines or Berdinius, but I could not find anyone by the lastname of G...

NB: As said by Borge in a previous topic, the list of emigrants from Stavanger is NOT official, as those of the police registers from the other cities. The Stavanger records was destroyed by a fire, and volunteers have collected emigration information from different sources.

Hi Tami This is a possibility for Berndines
On the LDS IGI there is
BERDINES MANGLUS GUDMUNDSEN
Male
Event(s):
1860 Munkejord, Akra, Rogaland, Norway
Christening:
Parents:
Father: GUDMUND GUDMUNDSEN
Mother: SISSEL ANDERSDTR
On the 1865 census
Click Here He is listed as Mangelus B on the Munkejord farm in Skudesnæs Rogaland.
and on the emigrants from Stavanger click here he is listed as Berdines Maglus Munkejord. If you click next on that page you will find more of his family listed.
The question is, how sure are you that Berdines and Ellen came to America at the same time and do you know that they were married in Norway? I didn't find Ellen and this Berdines came in 1882.

Thanks for the information. I believe that is the Ellen Gunderson I am looking for.

According to the 1895 Iowa Census his name was Benjamin Gudmanson. Could there possibly be a Norwegian name for Benjamin?

Also in Ellen's obituary it says they were married in Kopervik in May 1885 and came here shortly after they were married. I am assuming they came together. I wonder what other port they may have left from?

Hi Tami I'm pretty sure you have your family. On the LDS there is a record for Berdines Manglus GUDMUNDSEN
Spouse is Elen Gurine GUNNARSDATTER Gurine could easily be Americanized to Julie and Berdines to Benjamin.
Click Here for the LDS record. If you click on submitter details you may have a contact in Norway that could give you more information.
Stavanger would have been the nearest port . Elen may have left with Berndines but as said before it is not an "official" list and she just wasn't included. The record on the Stavanger record says it comes from the parish records so all that means is that he registerd with the church to leave the parish and was going to America (I'm assuming). Something could have happenend after he left the parish to delay his leaving for America.

Hello.......Thanks for the information. I looked at that sometime back. The only thing that was close was the dates. It could very well be them.

I wonder what other variations of the Goodmanson surname could be?
