Could some one please help me with some translations?. I would like to know if there is anywhere where the titles are listed in English for the census. I am particularly interested in the headings YRKE(does this mean job or occupation?) and what about FODESTAD-does this mean place of birth. I also have another one-is this possibly a farm or parish--EKHOLDT KONERUDVERKET
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks
Diane

Hi Diane,
yes, you're right about the translations...
  • yrke=occupation
  • fødestad=birth place
This page might be helpful: click here

Note: a "t" in the birth place coloumn means "born in the counting district", i.e. born in the area (village/parish) he/she is at the time of the census.

Regarding EKHOLDT KONERUDVERKET, there is a farm, a church and a small village called Konnerud near the city of Drammen in Buskerud county. I guess the people you found are born in that area, not necessarily on the actual Konnerud farm.
In 1900-census, there is a farm called Ekholt in Nedre Ekers parish. click here
The area are now under the city of Drammen...

So I would guess the farm name would be Ekholt and the area was called Konerudverket at that time.

Once you translate the main words, reading the census and other documents is not that difficult.

Generally, online dictioniares are in modern Norwegian (since 1915). Here is a link with a genealogical Norwegian/English dictionary and other good information.

Thanks for your help to both of you. I amlearning more and more about the language and decipering the words, now if only my relatives would have stayed in one spot!. But then there would be no challenge !. One other quick question-about the ships that are listed in this site-in particular the "Angelo" -did they just go as far as Hull or did they go there to reload etc and then move on to Canada or the States?. If only to Hull is there another web site that lists the trans atlantic voyages?
Thanks once more
Diane

Konerudverket might be a factory or a mill of some sort. The word "verk" is an old term for factory etc. Maybe the Ekholdt was a farm or a property owned by the factory for some of it's workers to live at.

That was my first belief too...!

But if you search for birth place containing "nerud" in the 1900-census, you will get many hits like "konerud, konnerud, konerudsogn, konerudsverket, konerudsværket, konerudverket, konerudværk, konerudværket, konnerudverket"
Almost everyone live in the Drammen area in Buskerud.

I guess the this must be the mill, and that the farm lies nearby:Konnerud Hill Mines

Recommend you read "Hunting Passenger Lists" on this site.

This is a good article, "Getting Into the Norwegian Census", it includes the major definitions.
