Trying to find husband's grand and great grandfather on passenger list . Raymond Alexander Elholm was born on an immigrant ship on the way to the U.S. on Oct. 8 , 1914 to A.(?) Elholm/Eldholm and ? . The only ship I can find that was coming into New York at that time ( we do know for sure that is where the ship came in ) was the S.S. Bergensfjord , if I am using this site correctly . My father in-law was told by Raymond years ago that when his parents came to America their last name was ELDHOLM but the D got dropped because of pronunciation . We believe Raymond's father was a captain of a boat or his occupation had something to do with sailing . After an arguement when Raymond was grown , his father declared that he would change his last name to Nillsen ( or some other spelling of the name ) . Maybe his mother's maiden name ? Someone did a census lookup for me in 1930 for New York and found several Eldholms , but none entered the U.S. in 1914 . I understand that alot of men came before establishing residence and work and then sending for their families, but it seems it would be mighty expensive to come and go between the U.S. and Norway over a few years . Besides , Raymond's mother was pregnant when she left Norway , so his father could not have come too soon before her . Can anyone offer some suggestions or ideas as to what happened to this Elholm/Eldholm couple and why they are not showing up anywhere together ? We have no idea of what her name was . We believe they came from Tysnes , or Bergen and I just found out there is an island south of Bergen called Eldholm . At this point , I am dumbfounded ! Raymond died 4 years ago and with him any substantial information . Thanks , Eileen |
