Hans Jacobsøn. Watner ... 6 Meller
I'm not sure what that means. "Meller" is an old norw. measuring unit. 6 meller could be the value of a place called "watner", owned by Hans Jacobsøn...

att: meller
Wouldn't it rather mean that the Wathne farm had purchased 6 meller of land (if meller is a measuring unit, I mean - I haven't heard of meller before, so I'm only guessing here. It just seems odd that a measuring unit was used to value a farm?) |

Back in the old days the value of a farm was always estimated from how much it could produce of different types of gods. To explain the value they could say how many units of butter or corn it could produce (merker smør or tønner korn) or other units and measurements could be used in stead or in addition. 1 Melle (or Mæle) was a measurement for corn, so 4 Meller was the amount of land necessary to produce 4 Meller of corn. Now, I will try to keep my tongue straight, but if anyone catches me in making any mistakes let me know - 1 Melle was about 28,8816 liters, 1 gallon = 3,785 liter. 6 melles = 45,8 gallons = about 22,9 pecks or about 5,7 bushels.
(I have already edited this once trying to get it right ) |
