Hi
I am researching my family and have just found out that on my paternal line we come from Norse Vikings in Norway. I was wondering if there would be any of my ancestors descendants still living in Norway and/or if anyone could help me with my genealogy in Norway?
My surname is Blanch - it was in Shetland Blance and previously Blanx or Blanj. We have undertaken a DNA study and the administrator of the study thinks the name may have originally been Bljanson /Bljansen or something like that.
Would appreciate any help. |

Hi relative! There are no ways of tracking your roots that far back, as there are no written sources that can determine exactly who your people are going that far back. If your ancestors came from Norway, lets say 1000 years ago, you probably are related to thousands of Norwegians (if not all of us) |

Thank you for replying. Nowadays fortunately with genealogy DNA testing it may be possible in some way to find out if I can find ancestors descendants with the surname Bljanson? Or Janson who has traced their tree back as well. So hopefully at some point someone with the name will appear. My cousins have undertaken DNA studies and this is how we know we hav the Norse Viking DNA - if someone in Norway living does the test who thinks they could be related could take the test and if we find a match then we find cousins! Complicated and quite tricky. Finding people with the name is my first port of call.
Thank you

Bljansen or Bljanson is a patronymic name. It has the meaning "son of Bljan", and was given specific to this person, who was the son of someone called Bljan. The son of Bljan's descendants would only be called Bljanson if his name was also Bljan (ie "Bljan Bljanson), and so on. You can find more about naming practice in the article Those Norwegian names, tips for the "online" researcher |

Hi, One of my ansisteros came from Shetland about 500 years ago. The name he used in Norway was Henrik Blank. His alias was Blanx, Banj . He lived in Erfjord. |
