I am looking for information to help me trace my Norwegian roots. Here is what I have, maybe you can tell me where to look next.

My ggrandmother Clara Amelia Tapio was born in Kristiana, Norway. June 22, 1887. Her parents were Carl (July 1859, Norway) and Hilda (Sept 1865, Finland). They left Norway a few weeks after my ggrandmother was born. So I know they came over in 1887. Here is my biggest problem.....They changed their name when they came over. In Norway, it was Johnsen (sp?). They changed it to Tapio when they emmigrated. I know they moved to minnesota. So where do I go from here?

I might have found my ggrandfather in the 1875 Norway Census but I am not sure. SInce his first born son was named Christian, and the father's name listed in the census is Christian. I highly suspect that I found the right family but I am not sure. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steph

Hi In the 1865 census there is a Karl Tapio age 8 (about the correct age), his fathers name was Johan so he would have been know as Karl Johansen (Johan's son) Tapio living in Vadsų Finnmark Click Here

HOly Cow, That makes total sense now. We always thought it was weird that Tapio was more of a Finish name rather than a Norwegian one. If this is correct then that is way cool. At least Now I have a place to start.

Thanks so much,

Steph

Hi,
Tapio is for sure a Finnish name.
A lot of Finnish people have over the years immigrated to the Northern part of Norway, especially Finnmark county, subsisted on fishing and trading.
And Karl's parents Johan and Sara are both born in Finland.

There is one Ove Richard Tapio (18y) from Vadsų, emigrating to Sebeka, Minnesota in 1906.

Could he be related to your family?

Jan

Hello,
I have found a 1900 Census for Carl Tapio and Family in Kingston Township, Meeker County, Minnesota. It lists himself (Born ?? July 1859) along with wife Hilda (Born in Finland Sept. 1865), son Christian (Born in Norway July 1884), Daughter Clara (Born in Norway June 1886), Daughter Yetta (Born in Michigan May 1889), Son Elmer (Born in Minnesota July 1891), Son Rueben (Born in Minnesota July 1895), and Daughter Esther (Born in Minnesota April 1898). Finnish suspicions were correct as the census shows Hilda from Finland and Carl and Hilda's Parents from Finland.
med hilsen Harley
