My grandmother arrived at Ellis Island from Norway in 1912 on the Oscar II (Scandinavian-American Line). I was surprised to see that she was listed on the ship manifest as being aged 11 when she was actually 14 years old. Her brother was listed as being 10 years old when he was really 13.
Could it be that my great-grandparents were trying to take advantage of a reduced fare for those under 12? Did such fares exist? The fares listed at http://www.norwayheritage.com/ships/fares.htm do not indicate whether there were special fares for children. Does anyone reading this forum have information about special rates for children?
Thanks in advance for whatever information you might have!
