Hello,
a commision agent was a man selling "something" on behalf of someone else.

Agent is a "better word" for a salesman, and commision means that you do it on behalf of others.

For instance; he could be working at a "ticket office", selling tickets to an emigrant...

Agent Richard Solem for the Allan Line, Trondheim 1903.

If you put up the link for your great grandfather, maybe we can figure out what he was selling...?
